| These are interesting for sure. I did not know they existed until very recently.
Could someone explain how these are tuned? And just so you know Myself and I am sure, at least, one other do not know how a cello is tuned. Also these are American Made?

That is the most common tuning but like all stringed instruments, there are dozens of variations available. |

| Ohhh No I never said I don't like any tuning?? I am confused...... all I am wondering is what is the normal tuning? I am quite sure these must sound absolutely fantastic no matter what tuning you use? Is it in the same octave range as a standard guitar normally?? You see I really know nothing about these and I am just asking questions to try and imagine if might have a sound I would like to own. It seems to me if it is like a standard guitar then you could just tune a 12 string like this and get the same effect and with two more pairs of strings. There must be a specific use for this fairly odd but wonderful instrument? Does the neck hold a higher tension so you cn tune it alittle higher than a normal guitar? I am asking not only for me but there must be a bunch of others who do not know much about these and who knows..........
Perhaps someone will want to look this thread up while eating Nacho's and study up on these mandocello's someday??

| Ahhh I see I am just a little thick. These must be quite rare indeed I know Stephen has one but to be honest it is the only other one I have ever seen?
They look like fun, bet it must generate a lot of questions when used on stage.

These are tradionally tuned like a cello which would be:
C G D A
They have very thick lower strings (I believe .78) and the strings are tuned in unison versus octaves.
They produce a dronning sound that you would liken to Celtic music or Druid music.
You can take a Mandocello and string it differently and have it behave like an Irish Bouzouki, in which case the strings are then tuned in octaves (like a traditional 12) but again with tunings more in line to the violin family.
violin = mandolin
cello = mandocello
bass = bass
They are a standard Ovation product, made in the US, but are usually special ordered with a wait time of a few months.
They are extremely fun to play around with and have a HUGE HUGE sound.

This thing must really raise a lot of Eyebrows when you play it!
Like Susan, I am not familiar with this instrument and I am thinking I might be able to work this into a few songs we are working as originals and this might just add that sound that a lot of musicians will try and figure out? You know......... Like the way we all struggle trying to learn everyone elses music.
Instruments should always serve a musical purpose as well as be fun and exciting when played. Then there are some Like an Ovation that also look like scupture and have style and grace!

Location: North Idaho | I've been watching for one of these for a couple of years. If they were like an 8-string tenor guitar, it would be fun. Some brands sound a bit like a sitar which could only be worse if they sounded like a banjo. How do these O's sound compared to wood boxes? Any sample mp3's around? |

| Stephen I did get it but I had to go into my email servers web site to delete it. I still have dial up it is cheap here but will always be very slow. I tried to let it load for 15 minutes then I gave up. Not your fault it's just the file is about 30 times bigger than I care to wait for. I am looking at faster internet services now as well. Went to Satellite dish, so I don't have cable now.
You have some nice equipment and I am sure we can work something out. Trades are the best!
If we learn to live with the fear of banjos, then have we won but the banjos, and those who play them, never really go away. And that is what scares me.
