I'm researching Ovations but there are a bunch of them and no way to know where to start. I'm pretty new but optimistic. Any suggestions?

Welcome! I'd check around for a US made balladeer or folklore. There are a lot of deals out there now, and you could score a great guitar cheap.

Welcome!!

If you are interested in Ovations you've come to the right place.

That's a very broad question.

So many variables but probably the initial questions are what type of music do you want to play and how much do you want to spend?

Focus on getting a guitar that is easy and enjoyable to play, and makes you WANT to play it. It's too easy to become a gear head instead of a musician. Newsflash ... an Al diMeola model guitar ain't gonna make you sound like Al diMeola.

I can personally verify that statement.

Dave I put Clapton strings on my guitar and I sound just like him. In my mind which isn't saying much.

busyflyin, welcome aboard! Are you a frequent passenger or are you the driver?

Style, experience, budget, and goals are all important factors. Do you like a traditional appearance with a round center hole or do you like the multi-hole look? Will you plug into an amp or just play acoustically?

That is the greatest piece of advice ever for a hobbiest. I'm into flying RC Helicopters. If you think guitars are expensive, try my hobby out for a year and see how much money you have left in your bank account!!

Thanks a ton for all of the suggestions. I'm still in the middle of shopping. I bought a used guitar at a garage sale for $40. The price makes it sound like a piece of junk, but my buds say it's actually a pretty decent guitar. I go back to when I was in high school and many of my friends were playing guitar and two of them had Ovations.. one of them had both a 6 and 12 string. I guess I'm caught up in my childhood! I'm 53 and just started out a few weeks ago and the calluses are already starting! Yup, any tips are appreciated.

How about an electric to start off with. The advantage being you can get something like a retro-style DanElecto for $180 that is very easy to play. Pair that up with a small practice amp and there you go.

Someday I'm gonna get me one of those small remote 'copters to fly around my living room. My goal would be to see how skilled I could become in bothering the dog. The perfect toy for Michigan winters.

Flyin', somebody asked before, where are you located? On this board, there's a decent chance that you could be close to somebody who has a few guitars. You could go check them out and get some guidence.....

If you go to one of our many local gtherings you can play a variety of Ovations in one day - more than most would see in a lifetime.

I live in Michigan near Lansing. Slipkid; my dogs hate my little indoor heli. Actually, one of my good high school friends sang in our wedding in 1976 and I am going to his house this afternoon to have him give me some pointers. In turn I'm going to give him some harmonica pointers... not that I'm really any good, but we all start somewhere, eh?
