| Hello, as you may know I have my Ovation Anniversary Model 1657 for sale on this site and elsewhere. I'm having no luck. I paid close to $1,000 for this bad boy back in 1982 and it is in mint(and I do mean mint) condition. What do you think this guitar is worth and what do you think it would sell for? Thanks for your time.

You could always post on ebay with a reserve to see what the public will offer.
I am also trying to sell one of my 1537's for 900.00. I've had some inquires yet no takers. The guitar may not be worth 900 to some one else, but it is worth 900 to me and I won't sell for less. |

$330.13, 7 bids, reserve not met (1657)
$699.00, 0 bids (20th Ann. CL)
$355.00, 3 bids, reserve not met (35th Ann.)
1,200 GBP, 0 bids (30th Ann.)
$750, 0 bids, (1657)
So, the limited market data (which is maybe not terribly reprsentative) would seem to imply that a 1657 is valued somewhere between $330.13 and $355. Daddy's Junky Music (Nashua store) used to have one on their website for $499.99 but I don't know the condition, or if it sold for that price.
I vaguely recall your posting, but don't remember if you put up pics or what you'd like to get for it. Generally, I think people are more likely to tell you your price is high (although that's usually termed...a 'little' high) or low (that's usually termed...a 'Great Freaking Price!'), as opposed to telling you what something is 'worth.'

I'm not saying you couldn't/can't/shouldn't get/ask/take more for it. Just what I would've found doing research as a prospective purchaser. FWIW, I have a guitar that has about zero value in the marketplace, but I won't ever sell it. My advice would be don't let it go for less than you think it's worth. |

Location: SoCal | I participated in an eBay auction for an Anniversary last year. End price was about $385...couple of minor issues, basically a great guitar. Worth a lot more but, unfortunately, not recognized by bidders. |

Location: Valparaiso, FL | market sets the value, but time fixes the market. Hold onto it a while and maybe you'll see it rise.
For me, the weekend player, the appeal of the new O's erases all the panache of the older ones. So it may get worse before it gets better for those selling older O's, because I think there are a lot of people like me. |

Location: SoCal | My best Ovations were built in 1993, 1983, and 1968. My best car was built in 1983. And my best woman was built in 1955.
I aquire very carefully. The newer Ovations are great, and I have no doubt that I will, someday, own an Ovation with a contoured bowl. But for now, I'll save for an OFC'er and am happy with what I have. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | When I bought my woman, all I could afford was an FRG (Factory Reconditioned Girlfriend). She was built in 1957 and I bought her in 1981. I was a little concerned about the 5 year warranty but 24 years in she's been pretty much trouble free. I don't take her out much and she seems to stay in tune pretty well. I send her back to the mother(ship) a few times a year and that seems to help her tone. When I first got her I used to gig with her almost every night. Man those were some wild shows. We don't gig much anymore. |

I don't really think what you were originnaly asking for the guitar is unreasonable. But you might turn more headsif it wer ein the $600 to $650 price range. Given your discription of the guitar, and the fact thati've seen the pics, I don't think i'd go any lower than that. It does truly look wonderful. Just a thought, but if you wre to give this a round on ebay to see what kind of interest and bids it generates, it might give you an idea of how much the ebay crowd would pay for it. Be sure to set the reserve at the very least you would accept cfor the guitar. It' just another way to get an idea.

| So where did you send her? Is improved giggability guaranteed? Did you use UPS, Fedex or limo?
StandingO - we share the same year for getting hitched - guess we outlasted chuck & di by some small margin - we're June 13th - you?
My wife was not built to my specification by any means - far too smart. But, like they say, sometimes you can't always get what (you think) you want but you might get what you need. And I did. Now if I could just get rid of her mother..... |
