I bought and returned this disaster 2 weeks ago. The seller honored the return policy and I got my money back plus most of the shipping cost. What he does not disclose about the neck repair is that the headstock has been completely replaced with a poorly fashioned non-Ovation replacement. The stripe up the back is feaux. Truss rod does not work and this guitar is unplayable. The face crack goes clean through and the case is thrashed and smells like a chain-smoker. The pictures are so bad that you can't see these details. I'm sorry that I did not take pics. |

Why post it here on the OFC and not on eBay where potential buyers would be warned? |

Location: Huntington Beach | Giving him the benefit of the doubt that he was just ignorant about guitars. Now it appears otherwise. I assumed he would not have listed again based on the outcome. He was very responsive to my wish to return for refund and even refunded most of the shipping. In that respect he was a true gentleman.
I have posted negative and neutrals before. Maybe I should have. This is the best I can do now. Just trying to prevent you guys an inconvenience. |

If someone writes and asks him, "didn't you just sell that guitar in auction# xxxxxx?"... I'd bet his response would be that the buyer couldn't pay and he felt sorry for you, so he didn't ding you as a non-payer. |

I gave This Guy a neutral after he tried to cheat me on a Second Chance offer.
You don't have to Ding the guy hard, but if you leave a neutral people will be warned.

If he was truly a scammer he would not offer 7 day money back and he would not have paid for return shipping and done so quickly. His other feedback is stellar with no issues. I am reluctant at this point to put a mark on his permanent record. I have sent him this email.
Based on your feedback history you appear to be a reputable ebayer. I think you may not know guitars. This instrument is unplayable and worth maybe $50 for salvage of parts. Save yourself and the current buyer by canceling the transaction as I am quite sure you will be getting it back again. You omitted from your description that the headstock has been replaced - and very badly done - and that the truss rod is non-functional. I have bought and sold many instruments and this is the worst I have ever seen. I am an Ovation collector and if the buyer is looking for a vintage ovation he will be greatly disappointed. I did not leave negative feedback giving you the benefit of the doubt and assumed that you would not re-list based on my comments. The current buyer may not be as generous. |

I am here as a complete newbie!! can anyone tell me the best way to find out a value amount on an Ovation Elite L718 six # serial, looks like circa 1994 from the Ovation site. I am almost afraid to find out after reading the last ebay horror story, it was listed there as rare and although that isn't why I purchased it it also didn't hurt. I have taken it to a guitar shop and had new strings put on it and had the electronics checked all seem fine. I paid 421.99 for it with hardshell ovation case. I also was wondering what should the going rate be to give it a good cleaning? They did some when strings were changed. Also any thoughts as to being a lefty and should I look for an instructor that is left handed. I live in a college town and don't think finding one will be difficult. Thanks |

I think that what you have is the lefty version of the 1718. I can't tell you what the value of a '94 1718 is off the top of my head, but if you searched eBay for completed auctions that would be a good start.
However, having said all that, $421.99 for a nice condition 1718 is an excellent value. Some may sell for more or less, but the truth is that the guitar is an excellent instrument, and a bargain at that price no matter what the eBay market says.

My advice is to find a good instructor without worrying about if he/she is lefty. A good instructor should listen to what you want out of lessons and then set up a plan that matches your goals. You should feel comfortable with your instructor and should understand what his plan is.
Have your instructor show you how to change your own strings. The Mom & Pop shop here will walk you through a string change for free when you buy strings there, so you will know how to do it next time yourself. Cleaning should be as simple as wiping down with a moist clean soft cloth once in a while, and wiping down the strings with a dry clean cloth after each playing (to prolong string life). You can use a guitar wax product a few times each year if you want. There are fretboard cleaning products that are debated/discussed once in a while on this forum.
Avoid silicone based cleaning/shining products like the plague. Other than that, any of the name brand cleaners, waxes, or fretboard products should be safe and should work fine on your guitar. |

I am a lefty player and never had a lefty instructor. In fact, I found the mirror image of my right-handed instructors' guitars to make it a bit easier to follow what they were doing.

Location: Boise, Idaho | There's a guitar teacher here that advertises that he has an advantage showing how to play guitar because he's a lefty. If that is truly an advantage, you should do fine with a righthanded instructor.
Left handed guitars are harder to come by and the selection is limited. You may be more or less likely to get a good deal on one. Less market to sell to, but there might be more demand. |
