Have you ever wondered about the difference between AAA spruce and AA spruce? Here's a photo of my rebuilt 1117 (yeah, I know ..... the label's probably gonna come out) and my GC RI. Both guitars that are on my "gonna keep no matter what" list (7 guitars -- 2 12's, 4 steel 6's, and a nylon). I was just taking a pic 'cause they look cool together. I was surprised in seeing the pics at the difference in the wood tops.

Interesting observation. No, they are not that pronounced. I was flat out amazed when I saw the pics. But you can see the differences in real life, just not that much.

The other thing you can see in that pic is 2 1/2 years of aging and coloring......

Nice, Paul ... you got your custom rebuild back. SWEET! Gotta play it on Thursday night ... I'll drive it hard and loosen that baby up for you. ;)

I love the braz 5 point. Nice touch. So ... are you happy or are you just gonna string it Nashville again?

Seriously, this is a real cool project. Can't wait to see it.

The difference between AAA and AA. It depends on what day it is and if it's before or after lunch. At least it used to back in the good old days.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'm sure it's all subjective, and depending on if their football team won that weekend, they had a fight with the wife, or had a little too much "libation" the night before, (or at lunch), the grades could vary quite a bit.

Notice that the wood grain is evenly spaced and runs vertically. These attributes are used in the grading of tops.
Master Grade is awarded to one in a hundred (or more) tops (very rare). Master Grade is the best of the best.
AAA is the second highest awarded for stiffness across the top, straight grain, quarter sawn, even color and consistent annular ring spacing.
AA is given for slightly wider and/or inconsistent ring spacing or mild color variations.
A is given for lack of stiffness, inconsistent ring spacing with visible cosmetic flaws.
Your rebuilt 1117 may have more "silk" in the appearance, but doesn't necessarily make it a better soundboard.

Time will tell what the better soundboard is, but even then, with 2 different bowl depth, it would be hard to determine how much difference the soundboard will make.

I was more commenting on the difference in appearance.....

The qualitly standards at Ovation never changed.

They'd just vary from day to day.

The 1117 seems the prettier of the two. My N769 is supposed to have AAAA. Doesn't sound any better than the N768, just a little different. Same with the 87C. All great sounding instruments.

In Youth athletics AAA means the parents have no life.
In Working dog Athletics (Tavern Leagues) it means Dad doesn't have any sick leave left!

In batteries it means you always have the wrong size.
