As a long Martin fan and player, he just recently got a 20 year old Country Artist and now is an Ovation Fan. ;) I hope that is only the first one of many Ovations and you will find the Folklore that you are looking for. WELCOME! Serge  www.sergiolara.com

Joined: December 2004 Posts: 26 Location: Detroit, MI | I've posted on a couple of other threads but want to thank Serge and everyone else for wellcoming me to the Ovation fan club. First time I've ever joined such a group and I'm glad he suggested it. Serge and I met when I lived in San Antonio, Texas. It was my last stop in Texas, after living there for 20 years, and I plan to return there with my wife when I retire. She is a native of San Antonio and misses it terribly. Segio and I share a great love of beautiful instruments, and have swapped a few back and forth over the years. Since moving back to my home town of Detroit we've maintained our relationship via e-mail, so this list will be another way of continuing it. I should learn a lot about Ovation guitars so, hopefully, I won't make all the stupid mistakes collecting them that I've made purchasing other guitars in the past. I consider Ovation to be a truly unique style of instrument... more or less in its own category. I was surprised to see that someone has one with a dreadnaught body style. Leo

Unlike some other sites I've seen, most folks here are not out to "distinguish" themselves from the crowd. What I mean is, those that obviously know a lot more techncial or historical about Ovation don't really come out and say it. They just help others learn. And people who's guitar collection is bigger, better, more expensive, whatever ... don't really brag about it. It's more like they "share" it with everyone else. I honestly feel like being a member of this site opens up many thousands of Ovation guitars for my enjoyment. I don't actually get to touch them all, but I still feel like in some small way they are within my "reach". You know what I mean? A fellow member recently told me that he gets excited if I buy a new guitar because he almost feels like part of the transaction. It's a great group. Hope we hear from you often. Dave

As one of the more suggestible, and impulsive, members of this group; I can say at least two of my critters were obtained, and refurbished, by the sheer force of will of Paul Moody. Mike Woodward has been a co-conspirator in depleting my exchequer, also. Not that I'm complaining, at all- they both give good counsel, and approbation. My acquisition, and dissemination to new owners, of "O"'s, over the past 3 or 4 years, has become one of the more satisfying of my collection of obsessions.

From the shadow of the Spanish Organ Mountains. Welcome!! Bailey PS I was stationed at San Marcos TX in the winter of 1953-1954 and spent time in San Antonio and Austin, New Branfuls and San Marcos, a little town back then. I loved it all, and the San Antonio River walk was just beginning but I spent time there and was impressed and decided that I would return someday. Never did, but it was a high point in my life. Left a 1941 Ford convertible parked there with a broken axle that I bought for $75, and drove up and down the Hill Country until the axle broke, it still may be parked around the old San Marcos AFB site. I also know where there is a 20-year-old 1113 Classical nylon string for sale locally if you want to keep going on acquiring Ovations.... :D Roger

Joined: March 2002 Posts: 873 Location: puerto vallarta, mexico | welcome folklore! another motown guy. i grew up in the neighborhood where the movie 8 mile was filmed. went to fitzgerald, macomb college, and wayne state. did the truck plant assembly line gig at night and school during the day. learned to sleep with my eyes open. things have really changed since i left detroit in the 60's with a guitar and a backpack. i remember being in belfast in '67 when some locals i knew there pulled me into the pub saying "isn't that where you are from?", pointing to a tv with detroit in flames and national guard everywhere. what condition are the tuners on your folklore in? i have a beater with pretty clean gold tuners. someone tried to put epauletts on it and 80 % of the abalone binding is gone. the electronics went into my 83 collectors. i use the folklore as my beach guitar, so the tuners will obviously not stay that way. i'd rather find someone who could swap some functional tarnished ones and help make someone's pride and joy prettier. kind of a pay it forward plan for my ovation amigos. russ

My uncle lived near 8 mi & Shaeffer, in Oak Park. I grew up in Allen Park (downriver) but went to Holy Redeemer HS in SW Detroit. I could'nt get away from this area fast enough after the riots. Finally came back from Texas only to help with aging parents... and now there is only my mom left holding me here (well, a good job as well). I will definitely be meeting up with Serge, in San Antonio, when I get white hair (like his ;) ). Detroit was coming back, when I returned in 2000. The jolt to the economy has made growth very difficult since 9/11. But, aside from the cold weather, and dodging some pot holes when you are in rough parts of town, living in Michigan has'nt been all that bad. Living in Detroit gives one character... Thanks for the offer on the tuners. I don't have a Folklore yet, but on hot on the trail of one. My only Ovation is a Country Artist nylon. The tuners do stick just a bit but I think they can be tightened up (possibly oiled).

Joined: March 2002 Posts: 873 Location: puerto vallarta, mexico | hey leo, my mom is the link to detroit and my past there too. still in the same house my dad and she built in the 30's. it was still farmland around us when i was a kid. maybe next time i am in detroit we can toast good guitars a "character" building town, and the wander lust. i also used to live in the hill country of texas. spent many a sunday at gruene hall soaking up music and longnecks. if your tuners are sticky, a good cleaning after you take off the tuning key might smooth them up a bit. i use a q-tip and everclear (non denatured 190 proof ethyl alky costs about 1.50 a liter here). take care not to lose the little friction washer. most of the time i find the opposite of too much friction. the tuners are loose and tightening the screw that holds the key on will help the grip on the washer better. i try not to get any lube on the washer area as friction is what you want. it's a little different with inline. tuners as the shaft the sring wraps around adds friction too. smooth and snug. you probably have already done this before, but losing that washer is a bummer the first time you do it. do you work for the library in det? main branch on woodward? if so i was involved in getting the ironwork at the entry restored. the library didn't seen to realize it was by yellin, the most famous american architectural blacksmith. it was being consumed by the road salt. time to warm up a bit for tonight's gig. i want to have time before playing to talk with a "kiwi" who just sailed in on a 54 foot ketch he built from 3 trees in newzeland. also a song writer. interesting living in a small boat port town. you never know what the wind will blow in. later amogo.
