Location: St. Louis Mo. | I have a custom Balladeer 1712 that my wife bought me around seven years ago. She got it used for around $750.00 with a nice case as well. I love this guitar and for the past several years it has been displayed on the wall in an out of the way location in our family room. My charming gentle 8 year old son manage to knock it off the wall splitting the top off the guitar from the deep bowl section. A local music shop told me that Ovation would replace the top for around $600.00! That's a bit much for us to spend on a guitar at present, so I foulnd another shop that said that they can replace some of the spruce top with thin slices of spruce. They said that it won't look perfect but should sound fine. I have a few weeks to wait for the results. I just wanted to see if anyone else has come across this type of repair before. If any one is interested I will post the results when I get my guitar back. |

Being a fellow Ovationist in need of repairs, yes I would be interested in hearing how it works out. Who knows, someday I might have the same problem with my 1711 Balladeer.
Norse(of course, any 8 year olds in my house will be grand kids, and hopefully not happening for at least NINE years from now :eek: )man1 |

Location: Reading, PA | Ah, the wonder of parenthood. My 1868 was the LZ(landing zone) for one of my two daughters while it was laying in an open case on the floor. The girls were getting a bit rowdy and my one month old guitar became an unwilling participant. I took it to the factory and the top was replaced for $350, but as I mentioned in another post, it has taken nearly 18 months for it start sounding as nice as it did previous to it's injury. I still don't think the action is as good as it was but I'll get over it or sell it. I did learn alot about myself and parenthood that day. It was worth the trouble.

What "special" material is the Ovation guitar case made of that attracts cats? It's more powerful than catnip. I can open an empty case, on the other side of the house from where they are sleeping, and by time I turn to take the guitar off the stand there is a cat in the case. |

Location: Dallas | Mr.O - Cats, dawgs & children automatically gravitate to anything that you don't want broken, shat upon, peed in, or don't want them to touch. Generally, when said organisms come into contact with said items, a magnanimous clusterfarp occurs...and you have to work part time to pay for it. You can shoot the animals & eat them, if desired, but cut the kids some slack :D

Location: Ct./ USA | Cutting out a crack and fitting in a thin slice , and gluing it in is an acceptable repair, i.e. Gibson repair book. What the heck is a perfectly good Ovation Gutiar doing hanging up on a wall? I do not mean to be mean, but there are gutiar display cases out there. They look like a hutch or something, humiditty controlled for your viewing pleasure.Please, keep it in a case. We at Ovation should sell scrap gutiars for $50 to hang on walls. As far as the odor in a case it must be the smell of wood and plastic. My cat loves my empty case, she "The Queen" curls up in it and falls to sleep. Must be my playing. |

| I got my legend off of Ebay - 2 years old and barely played by the original owner. However, the owner must have been a smoker, because the case reeks of cigarette smoke (doesn't effect the guitar, fortunately).
Any suggestions to get the smoke smell out of the guitar?

Location: Madison, Wisconsin | I bought a Legend on Ebay and the case smelled really bad. I'm not sure what it was but I bought some "Woolite Fabric and Upolstery" cleaner and it did the trick. Sometimes I think it smells like "Woolite Fabric and Upolstery Cleaner" now but it sure is lots better than it was. |

Location: NJ | take a couple of boxes of baking soda put them on a plate and then lock them in the case that will help get rid of some odors too.
my dad had an old refrigerator in the basement when I was a kid and he would always keep charcoal in there to cut down odors. you can proabably lock some of that in the case too for while. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I'm thinking either charcoal, moth balls, or maybe Arm and Hammer baking powder (like the 'ol open box in fridge idea). Also the powder version of Carpet Fresh might work, but insure you vac every last bit out as I don't think it would go with the finish too well. Just ideas, all unproven. |

Location: Nova Scotia, Canada | If you have forced air heating, you might want to try a central humidifying system that goes right into your ductwork. I tried this and it works fine. Not only do the guitars benefit, but so does everything else in the house...including you. If you do a search, you will find quite a lengthy thread on this subject. |

Location: AZ from TEXAS | Regarding the smelly cases- at sporting goods stores, in the hunting section, they sell clothes detergent with no residual smell and with special enzymes that attack recurrent "natural" odors. This detergent is made so that deer and other peaceful and happy critters aren't scared away by hunters. This worked in a case I'm familiar with. (with the case smell I mean). Plus, if you were ever to be stranded in the wilderness, you could use your case to hunt and clobber stuff. |

I saw one years ago. It had a light inside it with a glass case with 2 big doors a felt interior, solid wood case with a beefy crown moulding, humidity controlled................ the possibilities are endless.I really can not recall the place or catalog I saw it but look around, I"ll look also. |

I checked out the gutiar case, not bad. I am a woodworker and if it is not solid quatersawn, highly figured I tend to look the otherway, but these cases WILL prevent an accident, thank you. |
