The ex-husband puts the kids in boarding school. The plaintiff advises the woman on how to get the kids out of the boarding school, which is in Costa Rica. Something doesn't go right, we don't know what happens to the kids. The defendant posts some defamatory messages on a website for parents of troubled teens in boarding school. We don't know what the comments are. The defendant's house and worldly belongings are wiped out by a hurricane. On top of that the divorce comes and she does not have a pot to piss in. The plaintiff sues the defendant, who does not defend herself because she has no money and is essentially homeless due to the huricane. The plaintiff gets a default finding of guilty. There is a trial as to the amount of damages and the plaintiff wins $11 million. If the defendant has even a shread of innocence it's like les miserables or some opera. Maybe we can write a musical about it, but we have her dying in an accident with a dump truck carrying a load of recycled computers. Anyone have any suggestions for alternative endings? How about she goes to jail for not paying the judgement, and she gets a computer that gets only one internet website: The OFC!

Obviously this woman was concerned with nothing but her own vindictiveness and spite, regardless of how much the woman she sued had already been virtually destroyed by other circumstances...not exactly the most ethical, compassionate thing I've ever heard. Not just getting kicked when you're down - kicked when you're down, out, wasted, dying, and have absolutely no hope. I'll have to remember not to piss off a woman on the internet!

Joined: March 2006 Posts: 1634 Location: Chehalis, Washington | It seems like a question of whether some people just go to far. Mark, you might have more input than me, but it seems like sometimes people just push litigation to an extreme level just because they can. I'd be curious to see what the actual "slander" was in this case, and see exactly how much the plaintiff suffered in the way of damages, but $11 million seems like a ridiculously large amount of money for a virtually destitute woman making negative comments about a business. Heck, if that's the new standard, politicians are basically screwed...

Joined: November 2004 Posts: 286 Location: North Idaho | wonder if the litigant's lawyer was pro bono? After working on a LSP issue on a student workstation yesterday, I tried hitting the OFC for testing the web socket. The Websense Enterprise filtering proxy promptly blocked the site as an "entertainment" categorization. I was a bit surprised as I expected something more along the lines of "chat", "message board", "music", or "humor". I suppose that's better the world views posts in the OFC as for entertainment purposes only.
