Actually (and I hope he reads this and gets a laugh cause I'm gonna tease him about it at NAMM), Rick Hall, last March, said that deep bowls would be coming back. He didn't say in what form. I'm pretty damned excited about the new contoured bowls and am looking forward to playing one.

GAS, thy name is contoured bowl!

Paul, know thy enemy!

Specifically would that be a contoured Custom Elite LX with the Bearclaw Spuce top and OP Pro decoder ring?

It is good stuff to think about.

Woodrow, right now I'm leaning towards an Elite LX, contoured back, older, larger inlays (abalone), select bearclaw spruce top with aging toner and abalone around the body, and instead of the standard epaulets, use the same combination wood used in the 87 Collectors' epaulets.

And it goes without saying that the fretboard would be bound ebony w/ abalone around the edges.

Oh yeah, OP Pro with both 1/4" and XLR output.

Maybe I am missing something...last news release was 12/20/04. Went to the 1719 CL and I see the specs showing deep bowl with OP-50. Yet, 1869 CL shows the shallow bowl. And, the release of the C779LX CL is the mid-depth bowl w/OP-Pro (listed under LX guitars, not Custom Legend.)

??????????????????????????????

I commend the deep bowl on the 1719 but this is different than the contoured bowl being introduced in the 2005 Collector's.

For those attending NAMM, hopefully you can find a quiet room to evaluate the contoured bowl as to its acoustic ability. For the many of us not attending, we await your report(s).

Glenn, Not sure when my 1758-1 was born, will check when I get home..

I did buy it new, and I brought it to the factory when I got my first personal tour of the place in the fall of 95. They were in production of the burgundy 96 collector's at the time. I brought my 1758 with me from Cleveland just to take a picture of it outside the front doors to mimic the picture of the cover of the owner's manual at the time....I'm guessing it's probably a 1991. It has the lighter label with a pic of the factory on it. Nice, bookmatched grains on the top, with a darker overall sunburst paintjob compared to most...

There was a guy that owned my favorite music store for Ovations at the time...before Guitar Center took over the world....His name was Jim Priebe, he owned a place called Music City North...a great place..

Anyway, he got me a 2 hour personal tour of the factory with John Budny. I have pictures, and will bring them in June. Many have the 96 collector's in them...

So, JIM, if you're out there, I sure miss your store...

Hey Ernie,

Any way you could post the pics of your '95 personal tour in the OFC's gallery so the folks that can't make the tour this year can enjoy them?

Mike,

I actually have them in front of me at work.. problem is I don't have a scanner. If I can get someone here at work to scan them, I'll try and post them...

There's a pic of me sitting in their conference room where they have their group meetings where all the collector's series guitars are hanging....pretty cool, plus a few prototypes and rare pieces....there's a Thunderbolt in camoflauge, there's a couple of Adamas's with dual soundholes with a "car A/C vent" looking cover to them, there's the new 96 collector's...

There was also a guitar that was signed by everyone in the plant in the lobby. it was a natural deep bowl, either a legend or balladeer, I think it was a milestone, 500,000th guitar or something like that...

there are also pics of the mandolin that was being developed at the time...

I shot 2 full rolls, which I thought was very generous of John. He could have told me to put the camera away.

Such a cool place, got pictures of a nice lady gluing braces to the tops. A good shot of the Adamas area. Another pic of a wall where all the epaulet designs are and the corresponding model numbers....got another one of some guy painstakingly putting the abalone in a custom legend. even more of someone clearcoating the viper body, and another one of a deep bowl elite body on a swivel stool to get the sunburst pattern on the body...

all the steps to making the 5 piece neck, all the places where the fingerboards are routed,

even the repair area that looked like a bomb went off...there were neckless bodies ALL OVER the place...it smelled great, all the wood being cut....

i can go on and on...

Now who else would be standing around in front of a bunch of ovation amps, a thunderhead guitar and a typhoon bass?

I have had the hots for Shirley Jones since she played Marian The Librarian in the Music Man in 1964.
