A good friend recently bought an Ovation mandolin. As you know, most companies don't make ball end strings for mando's, and like me, my friend does not care for D'Adario strings. She wanted to try some SIT's. So I took a coat hanger, put a slight rounded bend in it, cut it to the length of the slot in the bridge, and put the loops over it. After I got all of the strings through the holes and the loops on the piece of wire, I slowly brought up the tension. By the time I had it in tune, the loops were perfectly spaced on the wire, the wire stuffed snugly into the slot, and the mandolin sounds WONDERFUL.

No wonder I love Frank Zappa. After all, necessity IS the Mother of Invention!

Several years back, I tried the same concept with a heavy gauge guitar string, but I like your idea better!
