Location: Buffalo,NY | Over a month ago, I purchased a great cream colored Viper from Miles with a rosewood fretboard.A few weeks ago I found a good deal(I think) on a sunburst Viper with a Maple neck:

I've finally had time to A/B them and, probably to no one's surprise, the maple neck is a bit brighter than the rosewood and very tele like in sound at the bridge pickup. Interestingly, the middle pickup sound has a sound that is very reminiscent of the Strat "in between" sounds and gives some very good Strat like "quack".
One of our other guitarists is now playing this maple necked Viper and loving it. This says a lot because he was playing my '69 Tele, which really sounds and plays great.He has been using the Viper at our last two band practices and is beginning to learn his way around it.I may be able to steal back my UKII that he had been using.
I love the sound of the cream colored Viper also . It ,too, is very tele like in sound at the bridge pickup, just a little mellower and less high end ; still gives me the strat like sound in the middle setting and lest I forget the neck pickup; this gives a very warm,very great lead sound. It reacts very well to pedals. The 24 frets are a joy to have as well.
Well you all told me I needed a Viper III. I had been tracking a cream colored viper III for a number of weeks on ebay. Yesterday I decided to make an offer and much to my surprise , it was accepted ;) !
What is a good price for the Viper III so I can see if I messed up too bad.It is supposedly in excellent condition. Here is a link to the auction:

Is the seller known on the OFC? He seems to have a lot of Ovation solidbodies.
I'll be very interested to hear what the Viper III has to offer in terms of sound.

Location: Upper Left USA | DF is very trustworthy and has Del's Guitars as well as an extensive book sales e-business. He has purchased three instruments from me (thank you Del) which has allowed me to get more Ovation stuff to work on.
His modus operendi is to post what I think is a high BIN price with a make offer. This means that the Buyer pays the price they think is right - or no sale.
If he says the condition is excellent - it is! He has the Ovation solidbody GAS pains as much as any of us and has handled a few nice models.
A nice Viper III in original condition is a hard one to find. As long as the kids are fed and the mortgage payment is made there is no such thing as an overpriced guitar.

what is the body made out of for the maple neck/rose wood fret board viper?
Do you think it's the rose wood that made a difference in the sound?
I've found that maple necks to be reflective of the body material, even with a rosewood fretboard, so I'm wondering if there isn't something else going on?
Maybe the coils have aged more on one of them?
Maybe one has a closer grained wood?
As to price, if it plays like buttah and sounds good, then you paid a good price. Don't look back. |
