My wife and I saw a cartoon or something that was like revelation, it showed a parent and a child in the classical confrontation. "Why should I listen to you?" says the child, and the parent answers "Because, I am BIGGER than you."
It comes down to that and it worked for us. |

Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | My wife is a "special ed" teacher and has students with different kinds behavior problems and learning disabilites. It just so happens the she works in a very "well to do" school district. My wife says, almost without fail, that when she meets the parents of these kids, she can see where the problem lies. Both parents are working very long hours in order to pay for their 3 cars, large homes, and all of the other goodies. There's nothing wrong with that, but if that's what they want, they shouldn't have kids. Many of these kids are not getting the attention and discipline that they need. My parents divorced when I was a kid but my father spent more time with me than many dads who lived at home. We're still very close today.
My wife also teaches Sunday school and had a new 4 year old student last week who was throwing a tantrum as his father tried to reason with him for several minutes. She said that the kid was throwing himself on the floor and screaming (sorta like me when I don't get my way). My wife finally asked the father to leave the room, and presto, as soon as the kid saw that the father was gone, my wife was able to calm him down and he was fine for the rest of class. I think that says it all. |

Location: Yucaipa, California | ...had a friend whose 4-year old daughter threw tantrums... he finally saw the light and when she threw the next one, he calmly took her into the bathroom, opened the shower door, gently placed her inside and turned the cold water on full... never threw a fit again.... and, no bruise marks :eek: |

Location: Minden, Nebraska | If parenting was easy and understood by everyone, all kids would be wonderfully behaved. The point is that parenting is a difficult task whose methods are far from universally agreed upon. It is further complicated by the research-proven fact that not all children respond equally to the same methods.
So, it takes hard work, patience, creativity and maybe some providence or luck.
I did get a laugh from the milk story, though! My point doesn't excuse parents who are idiots. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | I like the shower method. The milk should have had some for the mother as well.
Another observation I've had over the years, maybe some of you have seen this too? Black kids, 3-10 years old seem, to be better behaved than the white ones. Most of my experience comes from airports when I was traveling alot or worked there. I attributed this to the fact that maybe those parents weren't "afraid" to hand out the whuppin when needed as opposed to the new age yuppie parents who try "the new softer methods". |

I know what happened to her. She moved to Lafayette, Louisiana, got married, and currently has a three year old boy. They all attend church every Sunday. :D |

Location: Lafayette, Louisiana | The guy was the father of the 3 year old who wacked the Martin D-35 with the microphone. The mother was not there, and I don't know who was going to watch the kid. As soon as I walked in I knew it was going to be a bad situation. That kid was a terror, and no one there told him a thing. Needless to say I won't be playing there anymore. |
