Newbe back with a second question. I am looking for my first guitar.
Based on all your past advice the group is stearing me toward a
USA made
5 piece neck
solid top
older ovation maybe legend or Balladeer
The Legends and Balladeers seem to go for more than the $350. I want to spend. But I have found two 1621 that I can afford. They look about 20 years old. The necks are the 5 piece that the group seems to like. The tops look good and appear to be solid. The electronics appear to be controled by a single knob.
Question: Are these good guitars? What is the pick up / electronics like? Where were these in the quality line when they were made. (They appear well made.) They will still cost more than a new applause, but after your comments I am interested in the 1621.

Any comments advice will help me a lot.

Thanks your your help.

I think you will find that any of the USA made O's (and certain models of the offshore crafted ones, perhaps) are extremely well made instruments. My own O's are 15 and 25+ years old respectively. The Elite looked brand new when I got it (six months ago) and still turns heads (a story for another thread perhaps). Project Viper has some mojo kicking (read: nicks, scratches and dings), but for it's age it is in remarkably good condition. A guitar made to a cost may or may not have held up as well for as long.

As far as the 1621, I'm not familiar with them. But, if it has a five piece neck and solid top, and is in decent shape, I think you'd have to work at going wrong with one. Then again, I'm biased...I'm an Ovation Fan(tm). :)

EDIT: Oh, and remember Ovations look best in -4 finish. At least IM!HO. ;)

Russ,

I picked up an 1861 Balladeer on ebay a couple months ago for $310 plus $30 shipping.

It has all your criteria except it has the two piece neck.

I enjoy it alot, especially plugged into the PA for P&W.

If you follow ebay for awhile, get to know the features, and have patience, I think you could pick up a balladeer for your price.

I haven't found the 2 piece neck to be lacking in any way, although the 5 piece looks really nice, except of course the models they painted it over.

BTW, one of the hottest Os currently is the Elite T and I am pretty sure it only come with a two piece neck.

Welcome and enjoy the hunt.

Russ, those are the old Artist Balladeer model. If the price is right for you, and you like the sound, grab it. They were great guitars, much better than a new applesause or celebicy. You'll also be able to get more of your money back later if you ever sell or trade up.
