When we were young, were we smarter and more refined, or were we just too poor to waste money on albums that made talentless morons rich?

I guess I did miss a few:

Emo
Ska
'Oldies' (whatever that means to you)
Any of about 18 other types of rock

There's just way too many categories for music anymore...and not enough great musicians for all of them.

So far, this is an interesting mix:

1. Classic Rock
2. Blues
3. Folk
4. Soft Rock/'Easy Listening'

Classic rock is by far the favorite, with the next three VERY close. Obviously not many metal, grunge, or punk fans here, and NOT ONE admitting to playing rap...of course that's difficult on a guitar anyway!

Thanks all for your input - I was curious to see this.

:D

Would I be alone in having a thing for 'Country Rock' or is that an Australian term.

I've also heard it referred to as 'Southern Rock' - includes Lynyrd, Doobies, Ozarks. What category would you put these bands in?

Yep, southern rock was another one I missed, though a lot of the good southern rock bands now fall under the 'classic' title a lot.

Oh, and I missed gospel too. Just too many!!!

For a long, long time now (okay 30 years or so) music has been wa-ay too 'over catagorized.' Really, what's the difference between Speed Metal and Thrash? Punk and Grunge?

“There are two kinds of music. Good music, and the other kind.”
Duke Ellington.

I think all music that successfully conveys it's objective is 'good' music.

I don't have to like it for the music to be good.
I never cared much for Hendrix (apart from a few specific tunes) but I recognize the genius of his playing. I can't stand Dvoraks' New World Symphony, doesn't mean it's no good. But those are both examples of music that succeeds on its own terms.

"And the answer is John Tesh"

"Thank you Alex, let's leave "NORDIC GODS" and may I have MUSIC YOU TOLERATE TO IMPRESS YOUR DATE/SPOUSE for $500 please?"

$500 = "A former love of Linda Evans, his music was eventually banned by the American Dental Association due to its ability to negate the effect of Novacain in some patients".

Some of his very early stuff wasn't "too" bad ("Garden City" and the music he wrote for CBS's coverage of the Tour D'France a bunch of years ago).
It was when he married Connie Sellecca that he kinda' took himself a bit too seriously . . .

That move was the only one that gave him some cred in my eyes. And if I want to listen to 3 hours of crap music and non-stop, unasked for advice after dinner, I'll go to my in-laws, thank you very much.

Tesh played a concert at Red Rocks here in Denver a few years ago. The news ran a story the next day giving a glowing report about how he provided a soundtrack to a gymnastics floor exercise demonstration by Nadia Comaneci. That might have been worth the price of admission.

Don't give New Age such a broad brush. Alex DiGrassi, Michael Hedges and even Preston Reed all fell under the New Age category with Windham Hill and Narada.

I believe you've hit the nail on the head. "Good" is a very subjective word, but even if it's not your cup of tea, if there's an obvious skill and mastery to the presentation, then that is successful music.

To me, music that's not just instrumental has to convey a theme, and idea, or a story. If it does that, no matter what the musical style, I put it in the "good" category. ***

Now, whether I'll intentionally listen to it or not is another story.

*** excludes rap :D

"Rap and Hip Hop are not forms of music." ...

I agree that these are not forms of music, but an alternative for the musically challenged. As far as them being poetry set to rhythm, I would have to say that most of it would be considered bad poetry. With all that said, I guess if you had absolutely no respect for your Ovation instrument, you could RAP or HIP HOP on it.

I disagree. There is a huge difference. You just have to be a fan to know. Metal for example: Symphonic Metal, Thrash Metal, Power Metal, and Heavy Metal are all different, while falling under the same main genre of Metal.

Like dogs, just 'cause it's a dog does not mean it's the same. Husky is way different than a chiwawa(sp).

My point is, all those categories are not superfluous, 'cause they're needed for the fans to differentiate.
