Rather than fight the rush hour traffice, I decided to stop by the Guitar Center in Cincinnati and play a few Ovations.
Personal Observations:
1. The Mid-bowl Elite was real nice.
2. The Mid-bowl Elite T had a different sound. I would describe it as more deep or fuller and a little less bright, but still very nice. I think I preferred it over the regular Elite.
3. The Mid-bowl Baladeer was nice and I believe I preferred it over both Elites for acoustic sound.
4. The Celebritys were just ok for sound, but they sure do a good job on the appearance.
5. In the Celebritys I also preferred the Center sound hole versions to the Multi-sound hole version.
6. 12 String Baladeer was real nice and I really liked the sound of the 12 strings.
Decided to stop at Sam Ash also.
Personal Observations:
1. Pretty much the same as far as Celebritys.
2. The Applause models sounded about the same as Celebritys, but have a stripped down Pre-Amp.
3. Played the Black Tangent again. This time I can say I preferred even the shallow-bowl Celebrity and Applause models acoustic sound over it. (Has anyone noticed the Tangent tops are about twice as thick as a normal guitar top. If it is truly a solid spruce top, as advertised, what a waste of spruce. As thick as it is, it probably doesn't even need any bracing. You could get two solid guitar tops out of that piece of spruce! If the top isn't going to move it might as well be laminate and sold at a lower price.) Anyway, I think I am done considering the Tangent, because I can pick up a used Elite, Legend, or Demo Elite T for the same $.
Current dilemas:
1. I can't decide between 6 and 12 strings.
2. Can't decide between the V neck and Non-V neck.
3. Still want to play an Elite T, a regular Elite, and a Legend all in Shallow-Bowl configurations, but I will have to find them, probably at other stores.
I know, buy them all! |

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | Mark, I have tried all the models you mentioned and I completely agree with you. You didn't say if the Balladeer 6-string was the LX or not. MY choice (in this order) would be Balladeer LX, Elite T, Balladeer 12-string and then Balladeer (1771 or S771). My personal opinion is that the 1771 LX is the best of the LXs, followed very closely by the Elite T.
I would put the Balladeer 12-string at the top, but I see you already have a Seagull 12-string, and they are pretty good.

From looking at the edges of the holes on my Tangents, I thought the same thing. If you feel around in side the hole you will notice, it has a rectangle shaped doubler. It makes the holes edges look deeper and probably reinforces the edge of the holes. I don’t think the extra layer hurts the sound of the top in that part of the top. |
