Somewhere around 950 I thought I would celebrate my 1000th. That didn't happen either.

Since I don't have any of the CD's yet and I have never been to the tour, it gives an idea of what goes on in the jam sessions. Looks like fun. |

My first Ovation was a 1111, (I think) and it cost me $150. That's $150 Australian, which equates to roughly $112US.
And I bought it from a guitar store. It was missing the nut, they didn't like Ovations, couldn't be bothered to repair it, so they let me have it for 150, including case.
It was in pretty spotless condition too, and the nut only cost me 2 bucks. Sometimes it pays to be fanatical about a product that nobody else cares about.
That was a good score, but to risk going slightly off topic (Hey, this IS the OFC!) it was not as good a deal I got on my bass.
One Sunday morning, about 25 years ago, my mum comes home from a garage sale and told me that they had a bass guitar (with a case) for sale for $50.
So I dragged myself out of bed and went to see this cheap P.O.S...
... and the guy drags out this blonde, 1972 US Fender Precision Bass that had had a rough life, but played BEAUTIFULLY. The old plywood case had started to fall apart and someone had re-screwed the hinges on with too long screws and they had chewed up the extremities of the body, but not too deep.
That bass was in my car and I was gone in a heartbeat - after handing the seller a single banknote. I got out of there before he realised how excited I was and before he could rethink his price.
In the last 25 years, a lot of working musos have borrowed it, and I've had hell to pay to get it back off them.
I paid AUD$50, roughly US$37.50, for a 1972 US Precision Bass? Freebies from UPS don't count. I reckon I win. |

Location: South of most, North of few | Well, I know this isn't a great score, but at church about 2 months ago, some friends approached me and asked if I would like a guitar. Someone had given it to them just to get rid of it, and they knew I played (or tried to) and they gave it to me. It's a Hohner wood box, probably a 150.00 guitar new, but it serves as a beater. Came with a gig bag too. |

Location: Waurika OK | Since we are not at the tour and rambling on about our stories, let me tell you this one.
A lady here in town told me she had some guitars. I asked if I could see them sometime. A few days later she said her daughters told her not to sell them. I told her I did not want to buy, just see them.
Probably a year later she said she had decided to give me the guitars, after my protests, she gave them to me. Not that valuable, a Conn, a small one (Hondo type) and a small classical.
Two days later an old fellow who lived out of his van suffered a fire in the van and the neck was burned out of his Fender reso. The lady ask if we couldn't give him one of the guitars, I was happy to put new strings on the Conn and give it to him.
6 months later she comes to my house and wants the small steel string for her granddaughter to learn on. Of course you can have it back. One problem, in my trading, around the case it was in is gone. I put it in another case and gave it to her. The next day it was on my porch with a note that basically said, if we can't have the case it came in we don't want it. What to do? I bought a new cheap case to give to her, but decided to use the case the classical came in. I explained what I had done and she seemed satisfied.
Later she asked me when I was going to give her the guitar, she does not remember me giving it to her. Her daughter said she had not given it to the granddaughter.
She now wants the classical back, I have no problem giving it to her, but the case it came in is somewhere in her house. So now I must come up with a good case for that one. I had also replaced the tuners on the classical because the plastic the strings wind up on was broken. Not worried about that either, just want this situation over and done with. |

Here's my comment to start the day...
I've been playing classic rock for a while now, and I'm sick of it. Just not doing anything for me. Plus, my band had a falling out last saturday. Nothing big, just band stuff.
So, I'm thinking of going way back to something I was seriously into 25 years ago: Jazz. I haven't played jazz guitar in all that time, but I think I'll dust off some modes and funky chords and give it a whirl. Probably will take me six months to get my chops back. Maybe I'll try to put together a combo for the holiday party season. |

I guess were back to: "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't" I gave that Hohner the people gave me to someone else who needed a cheap guitar for their daughter. I'm waiting anyday for the original people to want it back. :rolleyes: |

I believe that less than 1500 were made. Not sure how many were wide necks. Not that many because you don't see them that often. |
