Hello, I am new here. My Fater-In-Law called the other day to ask if I wanted his Ovation Guitar. I promptly said yes, of course. Other than playing a friends once, I know little about them. It arrived today. A mint CS 257 in natural with the Ovation hardshell case. I oiled the fretboard and bridge and put on a set of Dean Markley CL 12-54's. I am grateful for the gift and look foward to playing it. Can someone tell me how to read the s/n coding ?

Welcome Aboard The OFC Website,

To answer your question click on the "reference" moniker of the OFC website and you will see a Serial Number Reference guide which some hardcore OFC fans spent a lot of time researching. That should help. Play On!

The CS257 is a Korean-made Celebrity, which the serial number systems in the Reference section do not apply to. I don't believe I have ever heard of a serial number reference for the Celebrities. Has anyone else????

Hope you enjoy playing it, gjg59......

I don't think there is any logic to foreign serial numbers. It would be best to track it by when it was bought and the configuration and try to date it from that. Good Luck with it.

You can get a rough approximation of how old it is by which preamp is on it, though the OP24+ was stock for many years.

The guitar has the black plastic OP24 preamp if that helps date it. I did some ready ing about setting up an Ovation today. I took out three factory shims, two white and one brown. I left one thin brown shim in. No buzz. It seems I lost a bit of acoustic volume but the playability has increased significantly. The neck relief looks okay . I see I need a special wrench anyway. Other than the unique look of an Ovation, what is the draw/benefit of the bowl design? It is definetly much brighter than my other acoustics. I also find it very comfortable to play. I also read I need to get some special wax to take care of the neck and headstock.
