I got a 1981 1614 - 4 Folklore on ebay. It was a big surprise: It's action is fine, and the sound is great. There are only two little cracks in the varnish, seemingly pretty normal for a Ovation Guitar 22 years old. Besides this it's in mint condition! :)

However, I don't know anything about it. Is the top made out of solid spruce? Why does it sound so much better than any other guitar made in the 80's i played before? How much was it in 1981?

And, in general: How can I examin whether an Ovation Guitar has a solid top or not?

Greetings from Germany and
Thanks for your help
Dirk

P.S. Please apologize my poor English :)

If it's a USA built Ovation, it's got a solid top (with the exception of the Guitar Center Koa Elites).

The main influence on the sound of the old Folklore is the 12 fret neck (which places the bridge in the centre of the top and away from the most rigid part of the X-brace) plus the extra tension produced by the slot-head helps.

The only way to tell is to examine the grain lines on the lip of the soundhole, but on older Ovations this is obscured by the rosette. Moody's right, all USA Ovations except the Matrix/Medallion, a few exotic-topped collectors editions and of course the Adamas, are solid.

Al, that's what I said, all EXCEPT the matrix, some collectors & the Adamas, are solid.
