Which shims? The ones for the acoustic electrics (or as my good friend Paul T says, electro acoustics) or for the straight acoustics?

Any dense hard material will do, just avoid the easy option of cardboard or a slice off an old credit card. The original Ovation shim was a resin impregnated cloth or paper phenolic material.

It always looked to me like a bit of a circuit board.

Paul, I'm pretty sure vero-board is or was phenolic, so you are kinda right. I'd guess a slice of circuit board would work as a shim.
