Location: Ft. Lauderdale, Florida | I have borrowed 2 amps from 2 buddies that live on boats... Both were Peavy's. Both cracked and had noises like an old am radio when any of the pots were adjusted...
Do all old amps do this, and you just have to live with it???
Does that Progold stuff mentioned a few clicks back help???

Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | The salt water probably has helped to corrode the pots on the amps causing the noise issues.
Progold and pot cleaner might help but replacing the pots would be best.
I assume the amps sound fine when the dials aren't being twiddled with? |

Location: puerto vallarta, mexico | a word of caution. some contact cleaners will disolve or soften some plastics. a friend recently sprayed a bass guitars pots with a borrowed can of contact cleaner. it melted the plastic in the pots and now the bass has no crackle from them at all. in fact nothing at all. in tiny print, "this product may not be compatible with all plastics. test before using." i think it was designed for use by an electrician and not an electronics tech. the bass was a daion? or something like that. |

Location: Minden, Nebraska | Taper pot with a lot of static often have oxidation built up on them. The 'crud' can be broken up with 30-50 rapid rotations of the control (same with sliding fader controls, though please do not rotate them). This procedure requires no spray, and usually achieves the intended result when the control is not defective or the oxidation in place long enough to become permanent. Oh, this procedure is best done with the equipment turned off.... ;) |

FWIW, I have a vintage Peavey bass head that was gigged (not by me, but by a bass-playing friend) and abused muchly back in the late 70's/early 80's (or thereabouts). It looks like it was dragged down a gravel road or fell over a bluff or something. But, there isn't any static in the pots at all.
Works well for amplifying my Elite...with 130w going into a 15" EV cone (custom cab) it fills out the bottom end quite nicely. Who said these super shallow bowls don't have any bass? 'Course everyone in the house is deaf now... |

FINALLY, someone who understands how acoustic guitars are supposed to sound. It is that rumbling bass that vibrates the ladies sensitive parts and makes them scream at the band members members. |

Location: Burbank | The best thing that works is to blow out with virgin freon. Works great and no sticky film that comes from contact cleaner and the all the loose crud gets blown out. Find and opening in the POT and blow out. Turnt he POTs a few times blow out again. That will do it. If you can't find virgin freon, use a canned air. |
