Location: New Mexico | Thanks for the responses to my previous post. I took your input seriously and sent the seller an email asking him about pics of the OP24 preamp )Custom Legend 1719). I asked him if the pics were display just dirt or rust on the screws that held it in. I also asked if he would take the 4 screws out and send pics. He did respond and said he would not disassemble the guitar because he could not guarantee putting it back in the condition shown in his pics. I appreciated the response and his reluctance to remove 4 screws. Seemed like a reasonable request so I decided against the purchase. Still considering the 1771 LX-5 but I have to admit for appearance purpose the Custom Legend was my preference. I really appreciate everyones help.

Location: Massachusetts | Is the LX the balladeer LX? I just played one the other day. It didn't really jump out at me but I did like the balladeer lx over the Legend lx tone wise...maybe because I was in 2 different stores?
One thing that's puzzling me....the rosewood boards on new Ovations seem to have gotten really lightly colored like most manufacturers rosewood.
My 2000 S771 has insanely dark rosewood you would swear its ebony. My 90's strats have dark rosewood. Seems like new Fenders, Gibsons and now Ovation are only getting light rosewood.
Kind of a drag but that's just me being picky about asthetics. |

Location: SoCal | I am always surprised at sellers who don't prepare the guitar for sale. The mounting screws and the area in the corners are easy to clean. Same for oiling the neck. Even selling a 6-string with a busted string. Had a couple of guitars with the control panel a lot worse than that one. Cleaned up nicely.
It may have no reflection on the condition of the guitar except, IMHO, it usually indicates a seller who doesn't know (or care) about the guitar. For me, a reason to ask even more very detailed questions about previous repairs, the chips, scratches, binding, rosette, separation of bridge, etc. In addition, asking for closeup photos of any declared damage. A good seller will work with you. Poor seller will either not respond or say something like "I said it was excellent in the listing" and not answer your questions. Course, his definition of excellent is probably not your definition.
If he is failing to answer your questions, most likely he is also acting the same to other potential buyers - could keep the bidding low and you get a good deal.
eBay is a crap shoot...found sellers that make the guitar sound worse than it is, others make it sound better. I have found both once the guitar is delivered. Fortunately, only a couple that were a condition less than what I expected. I recently bought a slothead 1658 Custom Legend 12-string for $560. Hard to get any answers from the seller that I could use to decide. Decided to buy it anyway. Found several good (not factory) repairs to include a neck reset, rosette that had been damaged, probable reglue of bridge, scratches, finish cracks with one major crack far more obvious than declared, etc. Fortunately, I was able to repair most of the problems to include several finish cracks - can't even see them. Scratches gone. Main finish crack from bridge to lower inlaid sealed and mitigated as much as possible as there had been a buildup of old wax and dirt. Guitar looks good and plays great. And, price was low enough that I could still send to the factory if I wanted to refinish the top and make it pristine
I have found that members of the OFC, when listing their guitars, are more than adequate in their descriptions. In fact, several must have experience writing warning labels on aspirin. Guitar received is far better than the disclosure. |

Location: south east Michigan | I thought the seller did a fine job of displaying the Legend. Lots of very detailed pics. I did not see the pic that had the dirty screws. I'm not surprised that he would not take it apart.
I'll go back & look for the dirty screws but I still thing that the Legend is the way to go. |

Many OFC'ers have reported Balladeers, with the center hole, sound better to the player than Legends, with the epaulets. Experienced OFC'ers have reported they have asked a salesman to play both. They report Balladeers are able to project sound to a player's ears better than Legends, but that Legends, with the sound holes dispersed around the body, are able to project more sounds to a non-playing listener. |
