Norsey,

Here's another one on ebay for you:

UPS should be delivering mine this week. However, I won't get to see it until next week. :( The ship leaves tomorrow for a week, have to take care of some business before it goes into the shipyard. At least I know my wife will guard it carefully for me until I return! Bought her another Longaberger basket to keep her happy for a little while.

Another nice guitar.

Paul, I have two questions about the GC 12's that perhaps you (or others out there)could help me with:

#1. With the older style pick-up, how do the lows/highs come across? For example, how might a 1618 compare when plugged in, to a newer Ovation (or Celebrity) with the OP24+ ?

#2. My Yamaha slothead cracked three times through the headstock from string pressure. Do you know if this is a problem/concern with the GC 12's as well? Those thin pieces of wood really make me nervous?

Thanks for your thoughts,

Norse(trying to be cautious)man1

Norse, I don't play plugged in very much so can't comment on the electronics other than to say that that is one area of the guitar that can always be upgraded (Paul has an OP-40 in his old GC-12). But having owned over 10 Ovation slothead 12 strings over the years, I can tell you that I have had zero problems with the headstock cracking. That worry would not even cross my mind. Dave

Norsey:

My GC 12 is 34 years old and probably has the best feeling neck of any 12 I've ever played (including Big Blue). And while the rest of the guitar (read that as the top) was pretty banged up before going to Ovation, the neck appears to be in wonderful shape. So, no problems there.

I have always been amazed at how terrific older Ovation 12's sound plugged in. And the GC 12, w/ OP 40 electronics actually (in the limited testing I've done) sounds better to me, plugged in, than Big Blue which has OP 24 electronics. I believe, that when you plug in, assuming that the guitar is a good instrument to begin with, the electronics are probably going to be the deciding factor.

I know that you are asking, basically, should you go with a guitar that's less of an acoustic guitar, and more of a plugged in guitar, or with a better acoustic that has older electronics. Personally, to me it's a no brainer. I'd go with the better acoustic guitar and then either add an external preamp, or eventually, upgrade the electronics.

Well Paul, the question for me is, at the price range I'm thinking of, I will probably be able to get a vintage 12, or a newer Celebrity (and this all depending on what happens with my Fed Ex special  ). I hope to find an older 12 without all the "normal" cracks and warps and things. I realize electronics can be upgraded, but adding that cost to the cost of buying a guitar... well, I just have some thinking to do.
