However, when I play at open mics in San Francisco and go into the house PA system, I am less satisfied with the tone. I should say that I play with either a plastic flatpick (medium) or a plastic thumbpick and two metal fingerpicks for fingerstyle. I tried phosphor bronze strings but switched to some Elixer's because I felt they fattened up the tone a bit. I also use a BOSS RV-3 pedal for a tiny bit of slapback echo. Like I said, I DO like the sound of this fine axe thru a guitar amp. What can I do to get better tone thru a PA (as a side note, the PA's I usually play through are good quality systems). Thanks for your suggestions!

Try using the PA's EQ and turning the on-board one off and visa-versa. Some sound guys do a better job that others and I've had it sound "better" both ways. Your super shallow guitar should sound great plugged in, that's what it was designed for.

Set the guitar EQ flat and ask the engineer to set the console flat. Adjust the guitar eq till it's as good as it will get, then instruct the engineer to give your more or less of what you want to hear (more bass, less top, less mid or whatever) Eq is much better at taking away what you don't need than trying to put in what may not be there. Most consoles will have at least one band of sweepable midrange, so ask the engineer to boost the mid-gain & sweep through the frequencies, have him cut the sound you like least by a couple of dB. Using a DI box rather than running a guitar cord to an unbalanced line-level input should help also. Your guitar regardless of bowl-depth should sound much better through a PA than any guitar amp. I'd guess it's down to half-assed engineers.

There is a lot of stuff out there and it's hard to choose what might work. I encourage all of you to describe your experience with equipment so we can all be better consumers (and pickers).
