Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Based upon the learned opinions of a number of well respected OFC members, I picked up a Trace Elliott TA100R amp. Great sound and the small size is perfect for ease of transporting to small gigs. The only problem is that after a few minutes the sound clips off. The amp stays on but no sound. It happens on all inputs and channels, even at realtively low volumes (2-3). If I shut it off, wait a half minute or so, then turn it back on, it works fine for a few more minutes, then shuts itself off. I have no manual. Am I missing something here, or is it time to visit the amp doctor? |

Location: East Wenatchee, WA | I tend to agree with Cliff. Sounds like a weak transistor, or perhaps a protection circuit (don't know the amp).
I had a Mackie FR1200 power amp that would do that. They have a built in heat protection circuit, and this just happened to have one that was not up to snuff, so at low output, it would just wink out. Lights are on, but nobody was home. Sent it back and they replaced the circuit and it has been flawless for about 12 years now. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Thanks, kids. I'll drop it off at the doctor's this weekend. Based on Cliff's suggestion, they estimate $45 for repairs, well worth the price of admission. |
