Changing out frets is not a simple job, and one that should be done by a pro. Why do you want to change them out? It might be easier to file them down a bit and resurface them. Stewmac sells files for that job, too.

I would suggest you learn/experiment on a beater instrument (or several) though. Lots of ways for things to go very badly... very quickly.

Lots of ways for things to go very badly... very quickly. If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong. If you perceive that there are four possible ways in which something can go wrong, and circumvent these, then a fifth way, unprepared for, will promptly develop. If nothing can go wrong, it will anyway. Left to themselves, things tend to go from bad to worse. If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something. Things get worse under pressure. And Furthermore... In nature, nothing is ever right. Therefore, if everything is going right ... something is wrong.

StewMac sells files, and they have a nice looking file that has a curve so that you can round off the top of the frets very easily. file them down.. :) that is a nice idea. what do you use to file them. any particular stuff is out there? thanks If you are just taking some small dents out of the frets it should be a fairly easy job. If you have to file every single fret it is going to take some time. A luthier might be money well spent. Check out the Plek machine. It isn't cheap but people say it works wonders.
