My #1 choice is Starbucks in my town.....we have about 4 located across the the city and I love to go and people watch while sipping a Frapp or Latte. #2 choice is Port City Java.......not liked as much as SB's because they don't have my favorite Frapp but in a pinch they do fine. Can't think of any other chain coffee houses..... :)

For those that haven't the experience - the coffee was cooked at least six hours and they never washed the pot - some days you could eat it with a spoon if it didn't disolve the spoon first.

I generally prefer the one-off m&P houses like Javarama, Bodi's Java, and the Daily Grind. I also spend a lot of time in the DC area, so there we see the ubiquitous Starbucks, but also some other places like Cosi and Caribou Coffee in addition to all the local walkups. My favorite? That would be a coffee shop in Delft, The Netherlands called The Game. A couple of blocks from the train station in the Old City, where a Koffee Verkeert costs 1 Euro and the flammable material they keep in stock is both top notch and dirt cheap ... errrr ... or so I've heard. ;)

A horrible establishment America has bequeathed to the world. As for a good place, in my neighborhood, I can recommend the Flying Saucer Cafe on Atlantic Avenue. Until recently they had live music flamenco saturdays. A good way to spend the afternoon while your clothing is at the laundromat.

So after I order, for my wife, a "sugar free vanilla latte with 2 percent milk", I order for myself a "big honkin' hot chocolate with whipped cream on top". Then when they ask my name I always tell them nicely, Atticus.

There was a Java City on Wayne State's campus that we used to go to...coffee was overpriced, but the staff were outstanding. Now I get to walk down to the hospital crapeteria and enjoy the coffee (from concentrate...no kidding) out of the giant urn. It's gotten so I drink a pot and a half before I leave for work in the morning. BTW, what's wrong with warm beer? Guinness Extra Stout just isn't the same cold. :)

Must be the combo. of cream and styrofoam cup that gives it a good flavor (SMILE). Starbuck's sucks! The coffee tastes like it's burned and just ask for a regular medium coffee with cream and sugar and you get deer in the headlights syndrome. They have all these fancy names and sizes for their crap coffees. Play On! John L. Custom Legend 1779-USA Legend 1777-LX Balladeer 1771-LX Std. Before I retired, I used to drink 5 or 6 cups a day of whatever was available, but I now drink one a day since I quit smoking some years ago. Mickey D has some very good traditional coffee and it is fresh because all the homeless agree and buy copious quantities of it forcing them to brew before it gets cooked to death like Tony mentioned. I used to drink Army coffee that had been cooked to death when we played poker with the cooks late at night in the mess tent. Bailey

It holds as much appeal to me as going into a GC when you're a total vintage guitar homo. (Hey I resemble that remark!) Dunkin is OK except they always give too much cream even when I ask for 1/2. We do buy the ground stuff and have it at home. I like the little hole in the wall places that suprise you by having something great, like a nice double esspresso. Also, don't you hate it when people say Expresso? As a good Italian once pointed out to me, there's no X in the word.

If so, let's have a survey of who among us has the most most sophisticated sang froid, or jene se kwah something, perhaps how you are percieved drinking it is more important than the brew?? Bailey (I grasp the paper cup with a light but firm touch, letting the essence of the brew tingle my fingertips, lift it gracefully to my lips, and, gracefully, scream at the top of my voice as the McDonalds ambrosia, served at the perfect temperature, spills out on my genitals ruining my sex life but gauranteeing me a generous settlement whereas I can take my sophistication to Starbucks where it will be appreciated and the settlements are even BIGGER.)

Deciding to get the full benefit of the experience, I went to the coffee section ("Starbucks"?) and ordered something. When I got it I did not really know how to consume it, through a straw, with a spoon, or just drink it. It had a glob of something kind of solid on the top. Being a certified rube, I discretely looked around to see how the sophisticated folks around me were comsuming their $3.50 cups of coffee in a styrofoam cup, not much help there. I drank what I could and discretely threw away the rest. My favorite coffee house is right here in town, Eck Drug and Gift. There is a group that assembles there at mutually agreed upon but never discussed times each day, you just kind of know "when". It is much like the daily meeting of the Ovation Fan Club, lots of good natured banter, many strong opinions, hearty greetings, and the coffee is very good, made in a Bunn-o-matic and the coffee is 25 CENTS A CUP, refills are FREE! One of the joys of small town living. noel
