Guitar Center in Tempe AZ just got 2 Legend LX 12-Strings. I stopped in today during lunch break. They play very nice and sound GREAT. However I was disappointed with two things. On one of the two, the inlays were very poorly done. They were not centered. I would say they were shifted at least 3/8 inch to one side. Looked really sloppy. Also there was a rough edge on the corner where the heel meets the top right at the fretboard binding. Looks like somebody at final inspection tried to smooth it and in the process they filed/sanded/buffed whatever, a section of the clear coat from the heel. A spot about the size of a pencil eraser. Again, sloppy work that should have been caught. The tuner in the OP-Pro also sucked, but I think we already know that. But for the important things like playability and sound this thing was spot on GREAT.

How did they compare, sound-wise, with your Adamas 12 and your older 12 fret 12's?

Hard to say how it compares sound wise. It was not an ideal environment at GC. Let's just say that given what I expected given all the external "noise", I was very impressed. Definately played better than the shiny bowls, but not sure about sound. Didn't play as easy as my Adamas, but not bad. They didn't have the discount price on them yet, just list of $1699. I'm quite sure you would be hard pressed to beat the sound for anywhere in the same price range. I was just disappointed with the fit and finish a little. Plus the OP-Pro (at least the tuner function) absolutely blowed. Color was kind of a yellow/orange. Not bad looking. Nice gloss black peghead.

The amber finish is probably the only type you'll find at GC.

I haven't had the chance to play the new Legend LX 12 string, I am sure it sounds great. I don't agree with you about the tuner on the OP-PRO. I find it easy to use, and the OP-PRO is a great sounding preamp in my opinion.

Paul, I didn't play this guitar thru an amp. I'm sure it sounds fine. But on two other guitars I have played with the OP-Pro, the gain was extremely non-linear. Maybe it's something you get used to but I found it very annoying and really limited the robustness ofthe control. Maybe they have engineered out this obvious problem on the new ones (and yours). But the tuner was a mess. Could have been lower battery, but the batery light was OK. Basically the tuner would randomly dislay any letter of the alphabet and then jump around some more. With a little patience you could get in tune OK, but it was quite annoying and would certainly turn off any prospective buyer. Maybe this particular unit (I only tried one) was defective.

most tuners, including on-board tuners will be confused if there is a lot of ambient noise around. Even the most temperamental of tuners can lock onto a 12th-fret harmonic and that usually cancels out the overtones generated by background noise setting the top in motion

If that's the store on Elliott Rd., I've been in there a few times. They seem to take a lot of pride in their little Martin room but it would not surprise me if their Ovations would be 2nd's with the kinds of flaws their average customer wouldn't even notice nor care about.

I wouldn't doubt if there are several OP-PRO's

OP-PRO with Al DiMeola lead boost and XLR
OP-PRO w/o XLR
OP-PRO w/XLR
OP-PRO on LX's

don't have the previously discussed problems with the OP-PRO in the 30th Anniv CL w/XLR; nor did I have the problem with the DiMeola. yet, with same background sounds/vibrations, can get "jumping" with a plugged in Korg.

when I make a comment about the 30th Anniv CL w/XLR - all four of them, no problem.

If they're seconds they should have the frig lable. You know where they put it, right? See if there are signs of something being removed. I'm not suggesting this is the case but it ocasionally happens.

I've got the OP-Pro on my 6778LX. Absolutely no problem at all. Tuner works beautifully just like my other non-Pro O's. Volume knob also is perfect - nice smooth volume increase across the travel. Now, the volume slider on my 1778-T is another story. Goes from almost nothing up to about 4, then a huge jump to almost wide open.

I think the thing I like the most about the OP-PRO preamp is the big volume knob. I much prefer a knob for the volume than a slider.

Found an LX Legend 12 string at the GC today. May have been one of the best 12's I've ever played. For a moment, my mind thought that I could sell my Adamas 12 and buy this guitar with plenty of cash left over to put aside for the OFC guitar.

Well, sanity hit and I'm not selling Big Blue, but the LX was a terrific guitar. I only played it acoustically and the strings were in the autumm of their lives but even then, it was great. Easy to pick, easy to strum. The tuner worked well.

But that weird orange color???? What the hell is up with that? Natural or autumm burst would be the best colors.

So far I've only heard of Butt Ugly Orange and Butt Ugly Orange. There's gotta be more than that. I'd hate to think that people are going to have to put on blinders to play this guitar.

I thin the "apricot" color (I'm trying to be kind) is a Guitar Cenetr special. The model number of the one I played was GCxxxxLX.

Mine had a regular model number on it. It was UUUUUGGGGGGGLLLLLLYYYYY. You'd play it because it sounded so good, but you'd put a bag over your own head in embarassment for the color.

I was visiting Tempe today and dropped in to GC to try out the LX. You're right. Both of them sound and play very nice. I see what you mean about the inlays but it seems that both are that way, (appearing to be 3/8ths or so, off center), but I think they're centered on the neck. -- It just appeared that they were off, compared to the lay of the strings. Being a 12 string, I'm not sure that they could avoid that illusion. Yeah , it does look like the final inspection might have been a little hasty. I'm sure Ovation's trying to crank a lot of these out before Christmas.
Can't wait for the Elite LX 12 to come out. :p

Aaaah - Elite LX 12 String. That should be nice. By the way, at GC did they have the selling price on the Legend LX 12's? When I was there they only had the list price. Still not crazy about the color, although I bet it looks nice under stage lights.

Nope, they hadn't hung a price on them yet. Still the computer-listed SRP of $1699.00.
They must not want to sell them too badly.
Yeah, the color would probably look nice under lights. It was really tantalizing --in it's own way. ---Kind of a Thai, Orange-sauce color. They did a nice job with it but not my style.
What really surprised me though was playing the Elite, Standard, 6, hanging next to them. I was soooo (did I say "so"?) glad I spent the extra cash and went with my Adamas. The Elite Std. felt like an Applause to play and they wanted about 899 for it I think.

Standing O,
I believe congrats are in order for that CE 12 string. I had been watching it all along and was very tempted to bid on it, but figured I would only be running price up on you, so I didn't. Hope you like it. Bill

I think the LX upgrades are great but I must say that every one of them I've played have had very high actions which to me is out of character for O's. Anyone else had the same experience?

Elderly has a natural 6756LX here's the link:

http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/6756LX.htm

Musician's Friend has one too: I like the $849 price anyone see one cheaper in natural ???

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/513270/

Is this the top of the line for Ovation/12 string short of the ADAMAS line ???

Notice, the one at Musician's friend is a Balladeer, that explains the cheaper price tag. The one at Elderly is a Legend.
