Ovations Rock!
I am new to the club and just joined and ordered the "adamas" package. How long does it take to get my stuff? Is 4-6 weeks about right?
I just got my Celebrity and started playing again. Anybody got suggestions for what type of strings to use. I am considering Ernie Ball Earthwoods (lite guage) since I have been playing my fingers raw. |

Location: Midland, MI | Welcome to the club, pbspeednut. Can't answer the question about the package, but I'm sure Al or Miles might know the answer.
As far as strings, play whatever sounds good to you. :) I was averse to the coated strings until I got my first O, but put on a set of Elixir Polywebs, as they came with the purchase. At first the sound was so-so, but now I've grown to really like them. Also, it's nice that I can get a couple three or four months out of a set. :) I think if you do a search here on 'strings' you'll find a bunch of threads with lots of great information and suggestions.

Location: NC | I use the D'Addario EXP16's...........I have a three pack and if you need a set let me know and I will sale you one set for $10. They are .012 thru .052 I believe and are the recommended string for most "O's". I bought the three pack on E-Bay and don't need all three.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Hey LX - Why are you selling the EXP's? I mean in time you will use them. They don't go bad in the bag as far as I know. I just installed a set on my 000 that I probably bought about 9 months ago and they seem fine to me.
PS - You need to buy more O's so you can use more strings! |

Location: Midland, MI | pbspeednut: I concur with the opinion on 12s on Ovations. I originally had 10s on my Elite and it sounded very good. When I put the 12s on, though, it became a work of art. The kind of art that when people hear it, they hear their own story...see visions of their own souls...and fall down wailing. Since I put the 12s on, there is much gnashing of teeth, beating of breasts and mea culpa mea maxima cupla going on. They drive the top that much better...or maybe it's my playing.

Location: Wallingford, CT | Hi and welcome! I have a Celebrity as well. On that I found Martin custom lights to work very well with that guitar. I also have an Adamas 12 string. I like the 11 gage customs for the Celebrity alot. Try them. It can't hurt. :^) |

| I am pretty sure most of these guy's will agree the heavier gauge you can handle, the better the sound(to a point). I am sold on the medium's 56-13's but my fingers have been playing for a long time and I play Bass as well.
The Adamas strings are great but I just bought a pack of cheaper Martin strings and they sounded just as good? The Elixir strings seem to have the ability to last much longer but to be honest I think for the price a few cheaper sets are just as good,as long as you don't mind changing strings.
Strings are cheap so try a bunch and find a favorite?
Somehow I have never managed to keep buying one specific brand my whole life? It always seems when I buy strings it is when I happen to be at, no specific, music store and I buy what looks good or what is priced to match the change I have in my pocket at the time.

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | I'd recommend starting with extra light daddario exp's 15, go thru two sets, then move on up to custom light daddario exp's 26 for two sets and then to dadario exp's lights 16. Most of the ovations ship with the 16s. A set of exp's last me about 3 months before dying.

I used to use Earthwood Lights on my Martin 12 for years. I loved the bright sound and I could afford to change them often to keep the sound. Recently, I've found they don't seem to last very long and I want a softer sound on my Legend 6. I've found D'Addario Phosphor Bronze Lights to sound pretty good and if you want really cheap, check out Stringthis.com and buy the bulk phosphor bronze strings. They sound great as well. |

A long time ago I joined a bowling league. I went out a bought a shiney new 15 pound ball. One the more experienced bowlers on my team asked if I had an injury or somthing, because I was throwing a fifteen pound ball instead of the typical 16 pound used by most men. I told the guy "no, I am not injured, I just like the lighter ball". He asked if I wanted to knock down more pins, to which I replied "yes, of course". He then said "then be a man and get a 16 pound ball!".
I get a chuckle out of players obsessing over guitar bowl depth, top bracing, and grade of wood, then they throw extra light strings on (you people know who you are). If you want great sound, be a man and at least put 12s on the damn thing! |

Brands of strings does come down to personal preference, but it does take a certain amount of energy from the srtings to "drive" the guitar top and produce the optimum sound that a guitar can produce. THAT is determined by string gauge. I prefer to choose gauge for the sound it produces...not for the comfort of my fingertips. If I'm working with a beginner, I may recommend Silk and Steels to make it easier for them; but at a certain point you get past that and take your SOUND more seriously. Experiment. Make your Ovation sound as good as it can. John <>{ |

I put up pics of the Elite and the Cropper in the gallery. I haven't had a chance to get pics of the Viper up, as my digital camera has given up the ghost. It's a bummer, as I bought it on my last trip to San Francisco about four years ago (I went out with a friend, had a blast...the stories we can tell...man) and other than the hot pink business card that 'Boy Drag' gave me, I have no other memorabilia, save some very fuzzy memories.
I'm trying to decide between the Nikon Coolpix 5200 and the Canon S500 as a replacement. I really want a Nikon D70, but can't justify the expense of a high-end pro-sumer digicam at this time. Especially considering I had to have a miniDVD camcorder (it burns onto mini dvds instead of tape) and it, uh, doesn't see a lot of use. ;) |

Location: Texas | The last set of strings I put on my S771 was Elixir Nanowebs, 12s. I have been happy with the sound and playability.
Several have mentioned using Elixir Polywebs.
Can anyone compare/contrast the Polywebs with the Nanowebs? Practical differences?

Tried Phosphor Bronze from Stringthis.com.
I found I prefer to change strings often, kind of like cleans sheets for me.
Getting them from stringthis.com makes it affordable.
I really enjoy a fresh set of strings on my Cedar top Seagull.
Just like to pluck a string or strum a chord and listen til it fades away.
I also like opening a good bag of plain potato chips and taking a big whiff of the fresh smell.

I'm not sure, but I thought the difference was that the nanowebs used a thinner coating thant he polywebs. I believe there is a comparison on Elixir's website that explains it, though. |

Location: NC | Standingovation your right.........I will probably use them within the year depending on time played. Or at least two years. I am hearing about 3-4 months if played daily and for some time. I play daily for around an hour or better or until fingers get a little tired. I may just keep them all. |

Location: east central Indiana | Thanks everybody for the welcomes & advice on strings. I have the factory EXP's on right now but when they die, I'll try your suggestions. I think the best advice was to have several Margaritas. (that'll make me sound better!)
I used to be in a bowling league and use an "alley ball" and rental shoes. My average was about 178. I purchased a new 16 pound ball and had it custom drilled to fit my hand. I also bought my own shoes.
It was a mistake, my average dropped to 154! Now I golf instead.
Maybe it was those margaritas. Go figure. |
