Location: Lafayette, Louisiana | Today I played at a church that is just starting a music program. The director of music there is good guitarist, and he has a really nice Martin D-35. Well today I got to see what can happen when an old Martin comes in contact with a 3 year old boy. We had just got through playing a few numbers before the service, and the director put the D-35 down on its guitar stand. I didn't put my guitar on the stand because I was really keeping an eye on that wild little 3 year old. I turned around to adjust the mixer when I heared a loud kind of thump. When I turned around to see what had happened, the D-35 had a nice jagged hole about two inches below the bridge! Seems the 3 year old boy got hold of a microphone and hit that Martin as hard as he could. I tell you I have never seen someone with such a sick feeling on his face as the director. The 3 year old was crying, the director was yelling at the 3 year old, and I was just standing there holding on tightly to my trusty Ovation. Well to make a long story short, I played the service by myself as the director, the 3 year old, and the Martin went home. I told him I would call him during the week to see how they all were doing! OUCH! :( |

Location: NJ | back in undergrad school I was playing a ton of coffeehouse and solo acoustic gigs. I have a D 35 that I bought back then and really like. Anyway I was at the school's radio station's folk festival and some bimbo who was into me ( I could not stand her) refused to do her set unless she borrowed my guitar. It was known that I loaned my guitar to NO ONE. Anyway the head of the radio station begged me and I gave up the guitar. The bim did her set and then hopped off the stool on the stage smashing the top of my beloved d 35 into the instrument mic. she put a real nice sized ding in it. I don't think I ever talked to her again, but sometimes wonder what happened to her. |

Location: Upper Left USA | The discussion today was over how high up to stack platforms for a revised stage. I'm thinking economy when I suggest a lower height to save funds.
The new stage WILL be high enough to prevent the ultrafast-ingenious-mischief-machines from hopping up too easily!
Wall hangers sound good as well.

Location: 6 String Ranch | I find the older I get the less tolerance I have for screaming undiciplined children. When I was a kid; a. we wouldn't have been running around screaming for more than 10 seconds and stayed alive; b. if this had happened then the youngster wouldn't have been able to sit for a week from the asstanning and would have had his allowance attached for the next 12 years to pay for the repairs.

I would have been livid either way I would have probably went back to prison.
Kids and musical instruments dont mix unless they are well diciplined.
Still, I cant say enough about this....it costs so little to insure your equipment why dont more people do it? I think I pay 30.00 a year for all my stuff, and I have over 13 grand in equipment,... so long as I dont go overseas with it I'm golden. |

As for the 3 year old: cant stand 'em. This is why they have childrens church, daycare, whatever... There's a time and place, ya know? Children who were given everything they wanted by "caring parents" have grown to be totally oblivious to anything as far as respecting how others may feel when their own kids are run amok. Time for the fireproof handbaskets, I guess, cuz it seems like a good portion of society is goin' to hell in one |

I see parents making deals with their kids or counting to ten while the kids are running around making fools of them. I personally love kids and I'm hoping to become a parent in the foreseeable future, but I can't stand being around kids who are out of control. The way I see it, parents have to keep their kids under control or get them out of the situation where they are causing a problem. |

The Adventure Cafe has little signs on posts that say "No Children on stage". They let me up there every week though!

Location: Fort worth Texas | This past Saturday I had to stiff arm a guy who kept jumping up on the stage trying to sing in my mic.....he was past drunk as hell, even though I was getting pissed I was laughing at him on the inside at what a fool he was making of himself. |

. . . I had/have this "look" that I give (which involves highly "arching" my left eyebrow) while calming saying my daughter's name . . . ALWAYS worked.
Of course, now that my daughter's 19, I'm now "paying" for that . . .
Still in all, just the fact that she had learned proper "restaurant ettiquette" at an early age made worthwile (for EVERYONE involved).
Ill-manner children annoy me . . .
This Summer, Jeanette and I had joined the local Community Pool for the first time. I came away with a great IDEA for a new "pool game":
It's basically plain-old "Marco Polo" . . .
. . . only all of the adults sitting quietly around the outside of the pool are given blindfolds . . . . and b.b. guns . . . . |

Location: 6 String Ranch | It usually does come back to the issue that it isn't the kids fault. It's the F@#@&*^% Yuppie parents that try to "reason" with a screaming tantrum. I recall it only took one really good beating and then it was just the threat of another kept us in line. |

In the row before the cashs there was a young lady with her about 3 year old son. The boy treated the man in front of them with his basket. The man turned around.. talked to the mother why she does not tell her boy to stop it. The mother said: "well, I prefer anti-authoritarian education... he is allowed to do what he wants to do"
As a result the boy did not stop to treat the man in front of him... until the man turned around... opened a bottle of milk he had in his basket... und poured it on the head of the boy... the mother just stood there here mouth wide open... and the man said: "well. I had anti-authoritarian education by my parents... I am allowed to do what I want..."
I will never forget the face of the women...*g*
please note... my daughter (becomes 5 next saturday) knows how to behave if there is any instrument around... don't come closer than 1 meter :-) |

See, there's 99% of the problem right there. As a parent, you are not, I repeat NOT supposed to be 'raising kids' or 'raising children.' You are supposed to be raising adults. There is a huge difference in the two approaches.
I know a couple that do the 'redirect their attention' parenting method. I prefer the 'good swat on the a$$' method (I figure the same hand that gives a pat on the back for good can give a swat on the a$$ for bad...keeps it simple). Their kids are biting, hitting, foul-mouthed little hellions and they can't figure out why. I've spanked my boys fewer than a dozen times a piece in their lives (14, 11 and 2...and the 2 year old hasn't gotten to that stage yet) and they know that when I say, 'Do that again and I'll tan your behind' that I mean it. In fact, I generally only have to put a hand on the back of their neck and say their name....quietly (in fact, the quieter the better).
And before some pantywaisted milquetoast says my kids live in fear...no, they don't, they have respect for authority and they understand the concept of boundaries.
Just my $0.02. YMMV, HTH, HAND.

Location: NJ | don't get me started on yuppie parents that have kids that can do no wrong. Lately I just keep calling the police it is the only thing that they understand. It makes me the bad guy but that is a role in which I am not a stranger. |

Location: Converse, Texas | Here's one for you. I have had several meetings with the local school district about having the truancy cases seen in our municipal court. One of the statistics is that 75% of all high school students get a FINAL NOTICE that they will appear in court if they skip school again. 75%! The judge and I were the only ones in the room who thought that number was high! :eek: |
