A quote from Pete Townshend concerning Michael Moore's "kvetching" about not being allowed to use "Won't Get Fooled Again" in Farhenheit 911.

I don't want to get polital here but the "change the world with a guitar" statement is where I want to focus. Is it true?
Has Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind" had more influence than say "Saving Private Ryan"?

Location: NJ | Music and Filmaking are BOTH very powerful mediums. Both are capable of stirring the hearts, minds and souls of people, but it is in fact PEOPLE and policies that change the world, not music and/or film.
I'm a very big fan of Pete's work, but he's taking himself a little too seriously. If the song (albeit a GREAT song!) is such a monumental "world changing" piece of Art, who held the gun to his head to sellout his Art to CBS for something as meaningful and world-changing as "C.S.I. Miami"? |

You know when a musician goes to play their "anthem" or a tune that represents the emotion or carries the heart of a matter - and the audience is singing along. Cut the band and Singer and up the audience mics. The audience is now the performer.
Visual and audio media can convey powerful thoughts and emotions to the audience but the audience has to respond or accept it. When the audience takes it, owns it and amplifies it as their own - that is powerful.

I wish I had the link handy, but I read an interview with PT on another site (not the freep) that went into detail about Moore. To paraphrase...Moore and Co. offered considerably less than the 'normal' rate for rights to use WGFA because they felt the movie was important enough to justify getting a cut-rate on the rights. PT's manager said no, PT said no, MM threw a tantrum in public. |

MWoody..right on...the audience is the real power. Townshend has said the same thing.
Townshend has said that "Won't Get Fooled" has meant different things to him over the years.

Pete Townshend, whatever his failings, has consistently shown his humanity again and again by supporting worthy charities. And it was he who "rescued" Eric Clapton from his cocaine binge in 1973 by organizing the Rainbow Concert, and making Eric play it(look at the pictures on the CD....Eric looks like hell). Eric would probably be dead now if he hadn't.

Location: NJ | A classic film (while certain aspects of it CAN be engrained in your psyche) really needs a proper, legitimate "viewing". A great song can be "carried around" in your head with you. No matter what you may be physically DOING, the music is always playing in your head . . . . at least it does in MINE ( . . . along with with all these damn VOICES!! . . . if only the neighbor's dog would just stop telling me what to do! . . ) |
