We had an ethnomusicologist (look it up) do a seminar at a worship conf. once. He talked about the "music of your heart": that style of music that speaks to you more than any other. All over the world, people worship with this factored in (except in most liturgical churches, where not much has changed for 500 years). He asked what the avg. age was at our church (40ish), and pointed out that our chosen style is sort of soft rock/country rock (Eagles, CSN,etc.)...the music of OUR hearts.
So I had to answer "praise/worship,easy listening/soft rock.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Well, as long as we're nit-picking. Why are there two categories of church music and no category of athiest music? I filed this same complaint with Best Buy and Borders. And yes, I did vote for the tropical category.
About 3-4 years ago I had a discussion with my daughter about the difference between punk and emo. She said that musically they were pretty much the same except that emo kids got good grades and their parents actually cared about them.

But, punk is The Ramones, New York Dolls, The Sex Pistols, etc. Emo is crap like Green Day and easily identified by bed-head coiffed metrosexuals wearing heavy mascara. To say that the music of Johnny Thunders is pretty much the same as that of, oh, Deathcab for Cutie or My Chemical Romance is ridiculous, IM!HO.
Or, maybe I'm getting old. |

What are they doing on the list? I'm well aware of that - call it random stuff from the brain late at night...besides, I'm trying really hard to be all-inclusive and all-embracing on this one. After all, each to his own...
Dave, I did include "athiest" music, as that would be anything not expressly "church." Counting the miscellaneous category, that gives 2 religious options and 18 secular ones...take your pick!
BTW, I would have loved to pick the tropical one myself, but I truly have no idea how to play that, and my legs look horrible in a grass skirt. :eek: :eek: :eek: |

Nearly half as long (ok, little more than a third) as rock has been around? Not that I'm defending rap, I'm just surprised at it's longevity.

Even you have to admit that putting out album after album of 'the man keeping me down' and 'the police messing with me' and 'all the women want me' while maintaining an image of 'poor, downtrodden, misunderstood gangsta' takes talent.
I laugh every time that MTV Cribs thing is on. It'd be like finding out that Leadbelly grew up in the main house and summered at The Breakers, dining on aspic and melons with the Vanderbilts. Would you still believe his complaints about big legged women scaring him to death? ;) |
