Assuming we would still keep it generally about Ovations and music, also following the moderator's other guidelines, but loosen up the reins on tabboo subjects just a bit. Would you like to see such a forum?

Light Jabs, a little innuendo and the occasional fart joke are fine. Political and Religious debate do not belong here. Graphic violence or nudity are out of place as well. If I ever post something that "PO's" someone they should email me and take it in that venue.

(Good Job, guys!) This board should not strain Miles or Al or cut into their fambly life. So having the open forum might move the inflammatory stuff off the main board and ease their load. I assume it would be restricted access? 2) I'd probably never go there; I come for the guitars (and sometimes the llamas) and would welcome an area to dump all the OT stuff - it cleans up the area where I frequent.

Miles and Al have a great "product" here.. a very well focused forum for us to discuss music, and O's and A's new and old. Sure there is the occasional tangent, but they are usually in the name of keeping things fun. Any "Open Discussion" forum on this site would have to be closely moderated to keep it civil. To do otherwise would sully the good reputation this site and the OFC has today. You can't just say, "Here is an open forum, and it's a free-for-all." What would take place in that forum would have as much impact (or more!) on how the OFC is perceived as the primary forums.

One of the reasons this forum is so enjoyable is that it is very hard to actually piss other members off because of the basic rules that keep up all in line. Having a section that would allow unbridled hatred, racism, religion, or politics would somehow spill over into the main forum and kill the overall family atmosphere that has developed here over the years. I may not agree with everything Al or Miles do but I certainly respect the effort and overall atmosphere that has been created on this site. I voted NO for the above reasons and if some of the OFC members want to talk about the above topics, there are hundreds of sites they can travel to. Al/Miles.....way to hang tough and keep this a friendly watering hole!

I will be honest, I believe what I believe, and no "open debate" is going to change my mind on those issues (yes, Bible based Christianity is one), rather it ends up turning into a bash and ridicule session which I will just politely bow out of. On guitar's and music related issues (perhaps not genre), I appreciate advise and experience from everyone regardless of their religious views may differ from mine. So...I agree...stay focused. This may not be an appropriate example, but I will toss it out: I used to belong to two forums related to a type specific airplane. One was anything goes, unsupervised and open. The other moderated by several experts in the aircraft and while there was a "jokes" and an "everthing else" section, for the most part, the discussions were kept focused. Inside of a year, the open forum became a place for "heresay", rumors and unfounded gossip to reign supreme, and when one of the experts (who participated on both) called foul on a particular piece of potentially dangerous bad advice, they were slammed as self-serving know-it-alls and told to go away if they couldn't be "open-minded". I recently checked back into the "open forum" and it has been little but several months of name calling with all the real experts having moved exclusively over to the "controlled" forum. So...my opinion comes from some experience. But...it is ONLY my opinion.

I see that happen to too many forums, where their main goal is swiped out of the way because the off topic forum is either the center, or drives out the people who'd like to write in the standard topic sections. My 2 cents ;)

If any of us, me included, goes over the line the moderators will slap us back in shape. That's their role. Keep in mind that WE (the members) do not own this site. We have NO rights whatsoever. Al and Miles own this and they can set whatever rules they want. They can delete, ban, edit, close whatever the hell they want to, for whatever reason (or no damn reason at all). Them's the rules. Maybe instead of busting Al's and Miles balls over this kind of stuff we should be kissing their asses for providing us (for FREE) a safe haven to hang out and discuss our interests in Ovations and loosely related topics. Sure, I've made suggestions to Al and Miles - change a font here, new color there, add some categories, ban the commercialism, change the into page (christ it's 5 years old), etc. But if none of it gets changed, that's fine with me. I'll continue to thank god/satan every single day for this place being available to me. Keep up the good work Al and Miles. Dave

Joined: December 2001 Posts: 7247 Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I voted no, big surprise right? Actually I made a couple of points in a recent email that I thought really summed up the reasoning behind our little guidelines.. My comments are below, but I wanted to point out one of the funniest things I've read on here in a long time... "a very well focused forum for us to discuss music, and O's and A's new and old. Sure there is the occasional tangent,...." I'm surprised no one else picked up this.. :) =========================================== Comment #1: I would love to have the "corner bar" thing, but as much as some can show restraint, we have those who can not and will not. They have proven time and time again they can't. So why restrict everyone else? Simple... when those same people are talking guitars, especially Ovation guitars, they are an invaluable asset. When talking religion or politics, they are right and everyone who thinks different is wrong, and they will fight to the death, forsaking all else. Comment #2: As far as the bathroom humor, I dont really get it and although we try we just don't always catch it, but even when it comes along, it's usually very short lived. Not always, but usually. The difference in how it's handled is a little based on the potential result. Bad humor or foul language, although offensive to some, tends to evoke comments (typed or not) of "I'm disgusted" or "that's just childish." However, Politics and Religion for some results in full on hatred. ===========================================

Joined: December 2003 Posts: 1071 Location: Carle Place, NY | Hey Brian, I think that you misinterpreted the voting. It has nothing to do with red/blue state issues. The majority here want to keep this site primarily Ovation/guitar/music oriented, with an occasional "off topic" provided that it is within the (mostly unwritten and very loose) guidelines. The members here have spoken. We don't want this forum to become a place where people can rant about anything they want to. I'm a New York lawyer and not a "red" state guy. Stephen is right. Don't assume political views from the voting.
