Can anyone here tell me what the differences are in the various Custom Legend Models? (aside from dowl depths and colors) i.e., 1769ADII, 1119,1619,1719,1769.

I think the main difference between those would be electronics packages. There's probably some bracing differences too.

I already know the ADII costs more, and the bracing differences is a good answer, but does anyone know the actual differences? There has GOT to be a Custom Legend lover in this crowd.

The AD-II has a tiny volume boost button on the body up by the neck.
As if I need it.

The AD-II is also the only current Ovation production model with a deep bowl.

I asked Rick Hall and he said that there is a little more attention paid to the signature models.

Doesn't the AD have some sort of boost button that the CLs don't have?

1119/1619 - early ones had standard neck w/ TRC; I think the bracing was either modX or fan, later models had K-bar neck and A-bracing; "hand-picked" tops; stacked V/T stereo preamp on the 1619.

1719 - AAA-grade tops; Ovation bracing, high-output p'up, OP24-style preamp (no stereo)

It just took an extra minute for my post to go all that extra distance over the internet. That and my typing is really slow. I don't make as many mistakes as Brad does, though.

Yeah.. sometimes my typing can suck.
It's just that my fingers can't keep up with my lightning fast, knowlegable insights.

And I'm very, very happy with my AD-II.

All Custom Legends have A bracing and AAA (or higher) grade solid spruce tops.

1119-Deep bowl, acoustic only.
1619-Deep bowl, FET pre-amp, stacked volume/tone controls. Early models have truss rod, '83 and later have Kaman bar
1719-Deep bowl, Kaman bar, OP-24 pre-amp in early models then better pre-amps as they were developed by Ovation.
1769-Same as 1719 but with cutaway
1869- Same as 1769 but shallow bowl.

The new CL's and the 30th Anniversary model have LX necks and OP-Pro pre-amps.

The AD 1769 now has OP-Pro and boost switch for lead guitar stuff. I think it always had the boost but with a different pre-amp. New ones probably have LX neck but I'm not sure when the switch was made from the Kaman bar.

There's your CL lover Vince!

Good info Mitch, thanks for that. Side note, do you know what the regular ol' Legend (first year with Kaman bar) had for bracing?

All Legends with a Kaman bar have A braced tops. Some older ones had truss rod necks and A bracing, but most of the truss rod Legends have VT bracing. The A bracing was first introduced for the Custom Legend in '74 and it took some time before A bracing became standard for the Legend. I think the Kaman bar became standard on all Ovations in '84, but some O's had it before then.

Thanks for the Excellent information. I once had the 1869 with medium bowl and loved the way it looked and played. I also had the 12 String version with a deep bowl.(can't remember the model number, but was very attractive with an old natural top that glowed. I actually donated the 1869 to a missionary in Mexico, now I'm kinda' missing it. I guess I never really new how the ADII was better until now. I'm sure the deep bowl and upgraded electronics are the big factors. I THINK the rosette is also inlaid instead of the glued on type.

Taking this thread in a different direction, I've borrowed Noah's 30th CL just to see what it's like. I've got light gauge strings on it but they almost seem too light. What does everybody who has a CL use?

EXP17 (56-13). I was using the lights (EXP16), but the mediums sound much better.

try some 14-59 and tune C2C. That should fatten it up.

Are there any differences between the 1769 and AD1769 other than the Op Pro and black paint job?
