For Sale: COLLINGS CJ SUNBURST

This may well be the best sounding guitar you ever play. I don't say that lightly. This is my 1997 CJ in Sitka spruce over Indian Rosewood. It is in mint condition with the exception of one cosmetic flaw that I'll discuss below. The sound is completely opened up and everything you would expect from a guitar like this. Yes, the hype you hear about Collings guitars is true. There is no fret wear and no pick marks. Note: it is almost impossible to photograph this glossy guitar. Anything that you see are reflections.

o Model CJSB (1997)
o Top: Solid Sitka Spruce, sunburst gloss finish
o Back and Sides: Solid East Indian Rosewood, gloss finished
o Neck: Mahogany with grained ivoroid binding, gloss finished
o Peghead: Gloss ebony, double ivoroid bound with MOP logo inlay
o Tuners: Gold Waverly open gear
o Fretboard: Ebony with pinstrip binding
o Nut: Bone
o Nutwidth: 1-11/16 inch
o Saddle: Bone
o Bridge: Ebony drop in
o Pickguard: tortie
o Case: Gieb style plus lined

OK, there is one cosmetic flaw as shown in the photos below. This guitar came originally with CHROME Waverly open gear tuners. The GOOD news is that I swapped them out to brand new Gold Waverly's. The BAD news is that in doing so removing the collar I splinted off a small section of the headstock face and lacquer. It is purely cosmetic and I have a quote from the Collings factory to fix it for about $300. It KILLS me that I did this to an otherwise perfect guitar. Yeah I know ... Stew-Mac sells the tool for $40 ... blah, blah, blah

As said, everything (except the photo above) is in perfect condition. The setup is spot-on and even the case is in virtually brand new condition. I have NEVER taken this guitar out of my house.

So why am I selling it? Well, I was just about to ship it off to Austin and get the little headstock splinter repaired and the opportunity to purchase a slightly different CJ fell into my lap. So I jumped at it and there is no way I can rationalize owning two of these babies. So I will have to very reluctantly let this one go.

Price is $3600. including 2 day Fed Ex delivery to your door in the USA.

Please PM or email me if you are interested or have any questions. Thanks, Dave

If I had to decide which guitar I had to sale between, the Lowden 025 and CJ I'm not sure I could make a decision... and many folks here have heard the Lowden.

I'm not much of a wood box guy, but this one... wow.
I wish I could swing it.

I have borrowed something like it tho....

Nice, nice guitar! I have one in the works ... had I known this was going to be in the wind, I'm not sure I would've started going down the custom deal. This one has everything anyone should want at thousands less than it's gonna cost to go to the factory.

Maybe it's just me, but has anyone else noticed that it seems every serious performing guitarist has one of these in their stable?

DANG! I just bought a new git! The Collings CJ that I had played a few weeks ago may have been the nicest git I've ever strummed (or fingerpicked). Someone is going to be VERY lucky to snag this one. Hope it's someone on the OFC

Yeah... if anything could tempt me over to the "other side", this would be the one.

Guys, this price is ridiculously good.
This guitar is beyond ridiculously good.

If it wasn't for the slight imperfection this would easily fetch 4K.

If it lasts the weekend either here or on the Collings forum I will be shocked.

Okay, my NEXT guitar will be a Collings. Might be a year or two away, but I have to have one after playing the CJ at G8rbowl. (hmmmm, what can I sell to jumpstart me)

That is a beauty, Dave. Like Brad, I played a similar one at Amelia. These have such great tone. If I had the cash it would be sold.

Everyone should have one of these.

I'm with dark bar. After playing a couple at Gatorbowl. My next guitar will be a Collings. Unfortunately it's probably not going to be anytime soon. These guitars are beautifully crafted and a joy to play.

Very nice guitar Dave. Wish I had the cash...

Dave: The link seems to be to a Mahogany back and side version versus the Indian Rosewood on yours.

PM sent.

Last year I was in NYC, stopped into Umanov's and played a couple of their Collings'. Briefly considered selling my 1537 and Ute to finance one but I was still a ways off where I had to be to bring one home so off I went tail between my legs. None were in the shape of Dave's (even given the headstock blem) and none were under 4k either.

I honestly cannot imagine a better sounding guitar. Definitely on my bucket list.

The one on ebay is pretty much just like mine except for the adi top (mine is german spruce) and a short scale.

Pictures (even Dave's) don't do these guitars justice. IMHO Collings makes the finest bursts in the world (with Ovations a close 2nd).

I'm suprised that we didn't hear Dave scream and curse on the east coast when scratched the headstock. Maybe Al or Cliff, John B, and Crimson Mike might have heard him.

That guitar for that price? A steal. I know if I had the extra cash around, it would've been gone the day Dave posted it.
