Location: Phoenix AZ | Serge, it's 2010. Ovation was the be all, do all, seen everywhere A/E guitar 30 years ago. Others have caught up - Fishman, K&K, Baggs, Takamine. Yes sad, but inevitable. 30 years from now it will be completely different again. |

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Taylor Swift learned to play on a Custom Balladeer 12 string...its in many of her pictures on her web site...and she won album of the year plus 3 other Grammy's...so at least Ovation had a big part in her story...Takamine was well represented by Bon Jovi...I agree with Dave...times do change...I keep hoping to see Adamas...on the other side...no Collings either...hmmmmmm... |

what difference does it make if an Ovation is there.
Ovations are for people who actually play their instruments on stage.
BTW-- I just saw Green Day win over AC/DC and Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood...
I coulda won a bet on that one...

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Obviously that part was live; yes, TS was very off pitch for the first song; she got better and by the last of the three she was back on...I think she had monitor trouble...I had a similar experience several years ago at a large outdoor venue...the monitor system was malfunctioning and I could not hear...consequently, I was off key for several songs...very embarrassing...
hey, she's also only 20 years old..singing w/Stevie Nicks...the word nervous comes to mind as well...
Bottom line: she has the number 1 selling album in all genre's this year...oh yeah, she can sing...
Man, its easy to criticize...her mom and dad supported her in letting her find her way and she turned being the brunt of jokes as a school social outcast into a well of songwriting ideas...and beat the cream of the Hollywood half dressed crowd in the process...good for her! |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | All in all I thought this was one of the best Grammy shows I've ever seen. The opening number with Gaga and Elton John, Pink's high flying act, Green Day's musical number, all rocked. Oh sure, the sound could have been better and it seemed most had pitch issues at some point, but it's live and everyone seemed to be having fun. I even liked Dave Mathews' performance.
The campy moments with Colbert and his daughter were fun, and the gal that brought a little kid (wearing a tux) up to the mic and asked "you you want to say anything" and he just said "no thank you" was very cute as well.
As someone mentioned on the show, Record companies are gone. Grammy's are based primarily on sales. Sure there are plenty of great artists and musicians who's material doesn't see the light of day, but in the end, as the Grammy's are an music "industry" award, sales matter.

Location: Tennessee | Taylor Swift started getting the rap that she couldn't sing live, so "they" decided to do an Ashley Simpson with her. Lefsetz outted her on the whole autopitch and hard drive performances at her live shows several months ago. She and her management denied it heavily, but the soundboard guys ratted her out. So now I think Taylor, Inc is trying to do everything without electronic enhancement and it's showing she doesn't really have it. Her abilities are largely due to studio magic. But you've gotta give her credit for going out and giving it a try. |

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | I went back today and watched portions of the show again...and I reiterate that Taylor's performance was pitchy and off key in every song: although the final song was the best of the three and the one most on pitch. Since I am a newbie about TS, I decided to do some searching and find out what others are talking about. I read a lot and learned a lot. I read a lot of conjecture but in the end I believe what others have said about her vocal problems. I have not seen her live and cannot afford the ticket prices for her concerts to take my daughter to. So she will have to listen to CD's and DVD's for the foreseeable future. But it is interesting. In the end, tell me which of those groups did not use some form of enhancement in their performances...I don't think you can. Probably why TS's set stood out particularly if she is not using any thing now. Even Stevie Nicks was pitchy (something that is not new to her either).
Hey, talk about pitchy: several big names come to mind that have way less than perfect pitch...
As for Taylor, I appreciate the songwriting the most for the lessons it can give to girls in particular who have not made the mistakes yet they would grow to regret...as a parent, I appreciate that help.
I enjoyed the show with a few exceptions...better than some recent ones. |

Location: Utah | I went back and listened to Taylor's performance on TIVO after seeing several threads online today about her pitchiness. Sara is a fan of Taylor, and recently discovered that Taylor used to vacation at the same beach town we do, and used to play at the coffee shop.
Anyhow, Taylor did pretty well on her own songs but really had a bad time on the harmonies with Stevie Nicks. It makes me think that they didn't have a lot of rehearsal time on the duet, and/or that harmonies aren't her strong suit.
The bottom line is that while we can criticize Taylor's pitch, she is a heck of a lot better than many, many very successful musicians. It is about the entertainment value, not the technical expertise, when it comes to the pop music scene. I give her a lot of credit for doing what she does and for her songwriting skills. |

You can Look and Listen Again...
Stevie is singing songs that she wrote and performed before Taylor was born!
And she was stumbling on the lyrics of Taylor's song, so they are even.
Plus Taylor plays her own guitar!

I recall John being in a funk 15 years ago saying that by 2010 he'd be in wheel chair. Hell NO! He's in great shape and still going strong.
Confession: my favorite JM and Chick will always be their acoustic work: Shakti, for example and "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" etc. |

Location: Texas | I think TS is talented, but, sadly, talent is only a minor ingredient required for success in the music business today.
I'm probably going to get blasted for this example, but I think Don Henley has a heck of a lot more business sense than talent, yet he has kept The Eagles perennially profitable, throwing out artists and creativity along the way, because profits are how success is measured, period.
More often than not, Best Record goes to Best-Selling Record, regardless of the musical talent (or lack thereof) involved. They reward marketing, not creativity.

She was trying to lower herself to Taylors very limited range and if you had never tryed to sing with somebody whose voice is jumping all over the place , its hard to do. Money makes the world go round and Taylor Swifts world has been bought and paid for. |

You are right on point. I think many forget that the Grammy's are "(originally called the Gramophone Awards)—or Grammys—are presented annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States for outstanding achievements in the music industry."
It's for outstanding achievement in the industry, not most talented or most popular, although it's nice when talented and popular run in parallel.
If you sell more albums than everyone else, that's an achievement. |
