So what are you all putting the Ovations to work on now? A new song? composition? remembering something lost?

For my part, I've been returning to basics: improving articulation, tone, going slow; It's a good thing to go over things you "know" and really try to play them "right" (if you know what I mean)!

Well my daughter is getting married in June. She asked me tonight if I would write a song for her and I to dance to.
All I can say is wow.

Got about a 1/2 dozen tunes half written.
Plan to finish them and get them recorded.
Try to do a 1/2 dozen more.

The goal is a minimum of 1 a month.

I'm still learning how to play. I have to learn the second Huttlinger-Croce dvd and Castles in the Air has been on the list for a long time. Anybody have a good tab?

Mark, I'm with you!!

I'm my own project!!
My goal is to actually have lessons and learn properly.

BTW I have a Don McLean song book that I bought years ago.
Do you want me to scan the song for you?

GREAT question, dobro! Encouraged me to crystallize my thinking a bit.

I've been putting new songs -- all experimental -- on my ning page for a while, and never happy with them. However, they've been improving -- at least to MY way of thinking -- as I learn better what and who I am as a guitarist.

So, plan 1: Continue that process until I can consistently put out material that I deem acceptable.

Plan 2: Cobble together a dozen or so thematically similar "songs" into a CD.

Plan 3: put together a performable solo "act." Call it three hours of material.

Plan 4: Locate and work with other instrumentalists and start on a body of performable material with them.

One remark: forcing yourself to record yourself is a GREAT way to help yourself figure out who you are as a musician. If you haven't alreadey, that is.

1. Learn to play better

2. Learn to use the recording equipment I've aquired

3. Figure out my PodXTLive

4. Figure out how to aquire more guitars without getting in trouble.

Great idea. I would LOVE to have a copy of that. Hopefully you can make it available to the members here?

Good luck.

Alan, Dweezil, Stephen... I really look forward to hearing the new "albums"! If I had a wish it would be to put together an OFC Decade Review Concert featuring anyone who is brave enough to contribute! Picture it: An evening of music in the style of everything from Croce, Campbell, Legg to Dajngo and McLaughlin!

AJ and Jeff, yes, that's what I'm talking about. I have a tab, but it's not accurate. I think it should be capoed up 2 and drop D tuning.

Joe Pass only used to play two 45 minute sets when he played solo. Al di Meola's solo tours were a bare two hours of playing. Three hours? Solo?

As the arthritis in my left hand gets worse, I realize I had better get everything recorded before it's too late. I am also teaching my friend Jeff everything I know so after I can no longer play, he can play my arrangements (and do a much better job than I EVER could!)

I didn't really put down the WHOLE idea ... it was to put together three hours of material from which to draw, in order to play different places, and/or different times, and not repeat myself too much. I suspect that Joe Pass could probably draw from hundreds of hours of material that he knew.

I'm ... ummmm ... not quite there yet.

Hi, Alison! I'm a right-handed player and have arthritis in my left wrist, stemming from a fall sustained a few years back.

I've recently been toying with the idea of teaching myself to play left-handed. I'm figuring it would be less painful to pick with the left hand than to finger. I don't say this with tongue in cheek. Can't hurt to try...and it just might work. A possibility for you as well?

In the little more than a year that I have been back playing after a decade (or more) off I have learned a number of new songs. I really think it is time that I went back and really learned how to play them well. I need to add the difficult parts that I tend to gloss over or just leave out, and work on the subltle nuances that make the song sound right.

Learn to relax, and accept my potential. And, "explore my electric side".
Great thanks to Brother MWoody, now & in the future.
And, attenuate my "gearhead side", as a diverting excuse from practicing. Notice, I didn't say "eliminate". Old habits die hard.

Alan, that sounds like a good idea for a young and ambitious person. But alas, I have grown old and lazy, and I doubt I would have the drive needed to relearn. Not to mention how frustrating it would be. I think what I will do when it becomes too painful will be to concentrate on Celtic harp. Learning to excell at that will more than fill up the rest of my life.

Sounds like a plan. Celtic harp is gorgeous! Best of luck, and here's to your arthritis halting in its tracks, and retreating so it becomes a non-issue!

Another New Year's Resolution: Improve sight reading competence! I'm bloody slow....

Also: I'd like to be as "comfy" in Bb and Eb (keys) as in A and D. I confess to compulsive transposition down an half-step: don't really have to worry much about horn players:)

Me too! I'm loving the Huttlinger-Croce dvd. I'm not sure what song I want to tackle first. I was thinking about "I Got a Name". This dvd will certainly help me learn fingerpicking skills.

As for my goals for 2010, they're pretty much the same as for 2007, 2008, and 2009, which is to play better, do an open mike or two.

The only difference is that I want to be good enough at "Father and Son" to record it and share it with others here for constructive criticism. I am having incredible difficulty with playing and singing at the same time, although I can definitely notice that my playing has gotten much better.
