...with my "new" 40 year old GC 12 string. Looks as if it hasn't been played much, no fret wear, just dirty with rusty strings. Gave it a bath, restrung it, and am now giving it a humidity treatment as the top is slightly sunk in, probably from dryness. Looks great and plays great too. I'll try to get some pics outside tomorrow, but here's a few from tonight.

That's quite a grab there T.J.
Nice to find one that old with such low mileage.

Since this is my first experience with Kluson tuners, is there anyway to lube these things? I tried to use some Break Free in the little holes and it seemed to help, or is it just my imagination?

The seller I bought it from specializes in buying up estate sales, so I'm thinking someone had this and played it for a very short time, then stuck it back in that very nice purple lined case, and forgot about it. Near as I can tell, it's a 1968 model. sn: 4994. Really nice THIN neck too. No K bar.

Jim,

Here's my .02FRN...

Since you're going through the beauty treatment:

-Remove the tuners keeping track of original locations.
-Spray liberally (ouch) with electronic contact cleaner (no cleaner residue) and let dry.
-Test for easy but positive engagement and rotation.
-Repeat until no improvements are noticed.
-Spray Corrosion-X (prevents internal corrosion) into the tuner bodies and let sit, drain and dry. Don't ya just love that Gulf salty air!
-Apply a VERY small amount of fishing reel oil (not grease) onto the tuner gear only, turn tuners to evenly distribute the oil and let sit.
-Clean the tuners exteriors
-Reinstall tuners to their original locations

I highly recommend Corrosion-X for preventive maintenance. I have a '94 Evinrude 175 Intruder that externally looks twice its age. Pull the engine cover and you'll find a sparkling and near new looking top end. Great for electronics also. Amazing stuff!

I'm sure that there are sites that will guide you through a luthiers procedure. But I've been more than pleased with my checklist.

BTW, congrats on the beaut! Enjoyed our conservation this PM.

Got outside this morning before it got blazing hot, and took a few more. This thing is in really nice shape IMO, even with being as anal as I am about guitars. This one won't be for sale for a while. (now I DID say, "for a while")

Wow that is nice. Just last night I decided that I will be sending in my 40 year old 1111-4 for hair and make-up do-over. It is playable but still needs more help than I can give it. Where is this mother ship I here so much about? It can't be far, I mean come on, I live in CT.

New Hartford. I'm heading up there this week myself if I can free up a few hours. Cooking up something with Kim Keller. ;)

LBJ, I'll be quite a while before I part with this one. I'm trying to keep this one for the collector value, if there is such a thing.

Anybody got suggestions on type of strings to use on this animal? I put D Addario EXP's on it, because it was the only set of 12's that I had in stock. I have used these once before, and wasn't thrilled with the sound of them on my Legend. I think I may go back to Elixirs.
