I discovered after all these years that Country Roads uses a similar Travis picking pattern to several other songs I tried many years ago to learn with a pick. Once I discovered that, it was a simple matter to learn Homeward Bound and the Boxer by Paul Simon and Danny's Song by Kenny Loggins. I was surprised how simple they were and that they were all songs that I could not figure out 30 or 40 years ago, but picked up easily this summer. Maybe there's something about that pattern that made me want to learn those songs years ago. What did you do for your summer vacation?

In case that matters) I learnt that I cannot sing loud enough to be heard over my guitar and/or traffic. (Which is probably a Good Thing) Also... Even if it you have a good acoustic simulator, people expect you to Shred if you take an solid-bodied electric outside. (I cannot, but I will do the Star-Spangled Banner)

I took lessons for a summer and the guy helped me polish it up. Funny you mention Danny's Song. That was the song I learned on also. Your right in that it fits so many songs perfectly and if not right on close enough that it is difficult to tell. For me this summer I learned really worked on Youv'e got a Friend and Hard Way Every Time and a few others. I also tried to start playing with a pick again which takes a lot more time for me since I have terrible rythm. Filled in most of the time with the 5 or 6 songs I would have to learn for Church every month. I did not have to memorize those but it was enough to keep me busy.

Toward that end, I'm following the exploits of Jukebox Joe avidly, but I'm not ready to spring for the Bose just yet. Having said that, here's what I did this summer: - Tried an even more scaled down setup by trying the Compact version of the Bose sound system (one less connection, but not as good sound, so stayed with the Model I) - learned a bunch of new covers for my repertoire (GOD I love learning covers!) - picked up a second recurring gig in the arid desert wasteland that is the live music scene in south Miami - joined the insane asylum known as OFC (even already met a fellow patient) - played (but didn't keep) my first Adamas - started recording a home album I've been meaning to record for over a decade

"Stay close to me" and "Somewhere over the Rainbow". Quickly learned they aggravate my arthritis, and that no matter what I do, I'm not really gonna sound like Tommy.

Almost Also (to answer the original question of this thread which I failed to do!), songs I learned this summer: - I'm Yours (Jason Mraz) - Viva La Vida (Coldplay) - Wanted Dead or Alive (Bon Jovi) - Tiny Dancer (Elton John) - Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison) - Oye Como Va / Evil Ways (Santana) - Can't Help Falling in Love (Elvis, but a Joe-ified UB40 version - one of the exceptions to the "learn it like they know it" rule) - People Are Strange (Doors) - Touch Me (Doors) - Light My Fire (Doors) - Is She Really Going Out With Him (Joe Jackson)

I agree with you on the L1, not that I have any expertise. I got to mess with one this summer. Sounded great, even with a Taylor. Rich, Hard Way was a snap once I saw Croce play it on dvd without a capo. Darkbark, Tommy is scary good. Try Eva's version of Over the Rainbow. It's much slower and requires some stretches, but it's sure pretty. Izzy's is good also and easy to imitate the uke by capoing at the 5th fret.

I can fingerpick with the best of them, but hand me a pick and ask me to play the same thing....I'm like a beginner, a complete spaz! I can strum just fine, just no picking.

I try to pick and I give up after hitting the wrong strings so many times that I start losing my place with my left hand as well. Eva is Eva Campbell and Izzy is a big Somoan. Both died young. Both can be found on youtube by searching for Rainbow. I can't spell or remember Izzy's name, but everyone called him Izzy. When you find it, you'll see why. His name is worse than mine.

Then I saw Emmanuel's version and said, I gotta learn that! Then I found this tutorial and it really helped. Try it over the rainbow

I also like the Iz version, ever since I heard it as part of a movie soundtrack. Either one is sort of haunting, by people who died young. I've always liked the guitar as a backup to the lyrics, at least when the voice is good.

For christ's sake do you people have any musical taste whatsoever or are you still listening to your John Denver cassettes? The only good thing Eva Cassidy ever did for music was drop dead and shut up. Good riddance.

Picked up a couple of Robert Johnson tunes, got interested in the slide guitar so i've been messing around with open tunings. Waltzing Matilda Shenandoah And bits and pieces here and there. I hope we can make a PNW OFC gathering come together next year. _____ gh1
