if I only had a nickel for every time I've played Puff and others of theirs over the years.

Sad, she will be missed by many. RIP Mary.

That is sad to hear. She had battled leukemia for some time.

Oh my... PP&M provided me with sooo many listening hours of pure enjoyment! She sure had the 'pipes'.

Sad day...

Wow!
I was listening to Her (and Peter & Paul's) music long before anything like Rock-n-Roll.
I would have to strain my brain nowadays, but when I was seven years-old I knew the words to most of the songs on the "Peter, Paul & Mary" Album.
(Used to really like to sing "500 Miles" while walking to school)

I'm here in right field just watching the dandelions grow.

A beautiful way to remember. Thanks for everything Mary. RIP

One of the best concerts my wife and I ever went too. They played at the Valley Forge Music Fair (long gone). It was a very small venue (maybe 1500 seats) and in the round. Their music was wonderful. I still Puff the Magic Dragon from time to time.

Rest easy Mary.

Their music prompted a lot of people to take up the guitar back in the early 60s. Their version of Gordon Lightfoot's Early Morning Rain was my favorite.

Remember in "Meet the Parents" when Focker was trying to convince his future Father in Law the true meaning of that song? Classic.
I just missed the whole P.P. & M thing, but still knew that song and would sing it as a tiny kid, thinking it WAS all about a dragon.

My absolute favorite song as a kid was Puff.

OK, I'm a closet PP&M fan and I'm out now.
There was a lot of endearing music from them and she'll be missed.

Very sad!

Puff is my daughter Tenille's favourite as well.
I used to play it for her when she was growing up.

She has been living in London for the past five years.

About two years ago she was feeling a bit down and she rang me up and asked me to play it for her over the phone.

Leaving on a jet plane is probably my favourite PP&M song.

Sad news. PP&M had that wonderful harmony that so many try to emulate but never quite reach the level they had as a trio.

Thanks Bob. It really IS about a dragon and childhood and it always bugged me that people's twisted minds turned a sweet song into something our parents were afraid to let us hear.

Somebody stop this. Too many folks that I would consider upper end of "my generation" are passing away. I don't like this.

I guess this has bothered me more than any other celeb death recently...PP&M were such an influence on my early playing...My first group was a similar 3 piece group called "Two Dukes and a Dutchess" and we did PP&M covers and built a following...
I agree with Dave, time is starting to flash past...

This post probably belongs in the 'formative years' thread. I had forgotten until now how much their music was a part of my life and music in my earlier years.

AJ, Leaving on a Jet Plane is a fav of mine too. The only one of their songs I have on 45. I played it so exclusively I had to go check what song was on the B side because I've never played it in all these years.

dg, thanks for the youtube link. It speaks volumes you have a one song, "Puff", that appeals to folks from 5 to 105 generation after generation.

RIP Mary

In late high school I played guitar for a lovely pair of twins that had that awesome tight 'family' harmony. We (The Briars) played PP&M and folk music.

As MM said, this loss really hurts...
