Here are three sound clips with short snippets of songs. In each clip I play either the original 1687-7 (1984 vintage) that just arrived yesterday, or the 1687-8 30th Anniversary Reissue I've had for nearly a year now, and not necessarily in that order, or in the same order in each sound clip. The snippets are warts and all - I wasn't interested so much in perfect playing as in comparing the sound of the 2 guitars.

Your task is to identify which guitar is which in each clip. Both guitars have brand new EJ16's and one shim under the saddle. Acoustic only recordings were made with matched pair of Behringer C-2 mics run thru a Behringer mixer and then into a Zoom MRS-4 digital recorder. The mics were 14" apart and 12" from the guitar, with one mic pointed at the 12th fret and the other mic pointed at the soundboard, about where a traditional soundhole would be.

Clip 1 is chord strumming with a plectrum at a fairly fast tempo.

Clip 2 is fingerstyle with notes plucked and strummed.

Clip 3 is fingerstyle with no strums.

Bonus points for naming the songs.

Dang it, the link to clip 1 above is the wrong file. This is the right one .

Interesting that they are so close. On the first clip, I liked the sound of the first guitar, on the second 2 clips I preferred the sound of the second guitars. But they were very very close in sound.

Does everbody here play better than me? Yes......

If that's warts and all for you, then I'm horrible.
I'm with Moody, I think clip one the 1st sounded better and two and three the 2nd guitar sounded better.
I've never even gotten to hold an Adamas much less play one or hear one up close but to me, the above is what I think sounded better, still no clue which one it was but leaning towards how much bette rmy oldie sounds than new ones, I'll put my uneducated bets on the better sounding one being an oldie too.Just my opinion.
Anyway,
The 1st one was Jack and Diane by John C. Mellencamp, the 2nd I couldn't place, the 3rd was Never Going Back by Lindsey Buckingham (a song I really want to learn, have to add it to the list)
How many points do I get?
You really play well, makes me look like I'm throwing rocks at my guitars.

Paul - try to learn that 4th chord.

Michael - thanks so much for the compliment, but I'm nowhere near where I want to be in my playing yet. You're right about ID'ing the 1st and 3rd songs. We'll wait a bit and see if anybody can ID the second.

I couldn't find a tab I liked for "Never Going Back." Most used absurd fingering, so I studied video of Buckingham playing it and tabbed it out myself. What ALL the other tabs miss is that he plays it in drop D tuning, which makes the fingering much easier. My tab version is available here . I also have a GuitarPro version of it.

Number 2 is Before You Accuse Me.

Nice playing. I'd take either one of those guitars. The second guitar sounds just a tad fuller so I'm guessing that is the 84.

Oh Jeeze, that tab is hell.
I'm gonna say it's waaaay out of my league for now.
Man, talk about feeling inadequate.
I think when I finally get to meet some of you guys I'm just gonna hand you my guitars and ask you to play them for me and do them justice for having such a rank amature for an owner.
I'll just claim a hand injury or something and enjoy listening to somebody who can really play.

Ok, enough poor me.
Have any of us been right about old and new yet at least?

Would #2 be Malted Milk? And I would fall in line with Moody on the guitar choices.

Great job on the playing too.

OK, I’m back and here are my guesses (I did not look at the posts before listening and guessing)

Clip 1: Original and then the Reissue

Clip 2: Reissue and then the Original

Clip 3: Original and then the Reissue

They both sound amazing and nice playing Serge!

Very well done G8r. I too like guitar 1 in clip 1, kinda hard to distinguish between the two, guitar 2 in clip 2 and guitar 1 in clip 3, however I'm having a hard time picking up the vocals in all 3...

OK, it looks like everybody who's gonna weigh in has done so. Thanks for playing, and I'm humbled by your compliments. Time for the big reveal:

Clip 1: Original then Reissue
Clip 2: Reissue then Original
Clip 3: Reissue then Original
Some of you have a very discerning ear...

Do I get the feeling the Reissue will be going up for sale in the future? Which one is YOUR preference?

Yay Paul. You know, I re-read my first impressions on the other thread, and what's interesting is that I rated the RI as being louder. But on the recordings, the original sounds louder. That's the difference between the player's and listener's perspective, I guess.
