Joined: November 2006 Posts: 3969 | Here's the reason for my selling my 1687-8 RI. Arriving today from the Big Easy, it's a 1984 vintage with the low-value signature. The only issues (fully disclosed) are a tiny paint chip just below the bridge, two small indentations in the neck, and a small bit of buckle rash on the heel. Put new strings on, and boy does she sing! At some point I'll put her down long enough to do a real comparison with the re-issue. Cloudy and rainy when she arrived, so had to settle for indoor shots:

First impressions comparing the RI to the original: The headstock carvings are a bit different between the two, as are the silhouettes of the epaulets. The necks feel identical in profile and playability, and so does the overall weight and balance. Both guitars have that distinctive Adamas "snap" to the tone, and both have subtle but distinct harmonics. The RI harmonics trend towards the mids, while the original's harmonics seem more dispersed across the ranges. Overall volume is very close, but I'd have to give the slightest edge to the RI. Both respond well to dynamics. The RI can sound a little heavy in the bass at times, probably because the mids seem to dominate the highs more so than on the original. The RI can sound slightly muddy in comparison (more like a Martin dread), especially with heavier strumming, as a result of that mid domination. The original sounds a bit crisper, with great articulation. The sustain battle goes to the original. The biggest difference is when I really dig in - the RI starts to choke a bit, especially up the fretboard in the higher registers, while the original maintains a clean distinction of all notes no matter how hard I play it. The RI is a superb re-creation, and nobody would be disappointed with it ( it\'s still available ). There's just something about the original, though, that gives it a slight edge. Numerically, I'd rate the RI at a 9, and the original at a 9.5 (a very few Collings I've played would get a 10). I'll try to post a sound clip comparison tonight.
