Hey gang! I have been thinking about trying my hand at some home recording. I don't know jack about equipment, techniques, etc. I am pretty sure that a bunch of you guys do recordings. I am looking for a heads up on what recording equipment (Under $300) is decent and easy to learn to use. I would like something that can record direct to cd or flash drive, but tape will do if price is exorbitant.

Any tips???

Hoss

Hoss, go over to the Social Site and join the Home Recording group. Lots of good information archived over there for moments just like these.

Yeah but in this case, Hoss needs some recording equipment and I can help the guy out so I 'mailed it in. With luck I can sell enough to pick up something I'd REALLY enjoy...! Hmm, maybe work a three way deal with you - how many pies do you need...?

Since I haven't received any mp3's from you I assume you're selling the TonePort and moving to Utica to live the rest of your days in anonymity.

I am selling the TonePort to Hoss but not because I've completely moved out of the recording world. I've just moved into different equipment and, with the TonePort just sitting there and Hoss looking to break in, it was really a easy match for everyone.

And there's no reason for me to hate Utica so much as to move there. And anonymity? I believe I have way too much to offer for that. (I could be the ONLY one who believes that but nevertheless...)

I'm praying to God this doesn't somehow segue back into Waskel's other "home recordings"...

Careful now, Weas. I'll have to publish your emails describing your concerns about your "equipment".

Does anyone have any experience with Cubase, LE specifically?

Just got Cubase LE with a used Zoom A2.1u from eBay. The only thing I've learned is that the version of Cubase LE included with my unit (1.0.10) is not Windows Vista compatible. I installed it on the Windows XP partition of my multi-boot system. You might find a Cubase LE 4 in some newer bundles. Here\'s a Steinberger page about Vista compatibility.

I already know a little about Audacity and it's fine for my simple rhythm/lead noodling or playing over a backing track.

I run regular Cubase 5 and I think Cliff runs LE.
Did you have a specific question?

I use two condensor mics (plus pickup where applicable) and go into a M-AUDIO Fast Track Ultra then into a laptop running Cubase LE 4.

The two mics record to one track in stereo the pickup goes to another track. I strongly recommend recording 'dry', i.e. without effects etc. Then I master, blending the tracks, adding effects as desired.

You can hear my recordings here , select Quadruped (plug, plug ;) )

Erm I wouldn't bother with tape these days!!!
