If I'm just playing for me (read practice) I just leave'em alone. If I take one out of the case that's been sitting, if I really want to hear what it sounds like, I put on new strings. If it's just for practice... I leave whatever is on them.

I have no excuses for the Morgans except I've been playing Ovations exclusively lately. The Yamaha is a different story. It is the "shop guitar", for regulars who didn't happen to bring one today. The guy who plays it the most LIKES dead strings. Go figure.

I keep the strings wrapper/box in the case neck compartment. I guess I could also put the change date in there too... naw...visual or sound for me

When strings get Older , it seems I adapt to `em, it influences the way I play ... is n`t that odd ..? Not that I`m a virtuoso or anything .. Does any-one .. Un -coil / Straighten strings .. and hangs `em to get them as " straight as possible " several weeks prior to use .. Vic

On the guitars I play regularly by sound I put a small round paper sticker on the back of the headstock with the date changed and string type. AJ

I just started doing that cuz someone here recommended it. I also write it on my calendar. If the guitar sounds crappy to me I look on the calendar. If I haven't changed them this year, it must be time for a change... If I just changed them last month, it must be ME!

Sometimes one or another string just won't intonate properly, or die quicker, so off with their heads! I do write down the dates of my changes, but I frequently ignore my own notes. Who do I think I am anyway??

Joined: May 2004 Posts: 2850 Location: Midland, MI | I hate changing strings, so I generally wait until they sound totally horrid (e.g., even worse than my lack of talent would normally make them sound), or they look crusty/rusty. I can't imagine keeping a log of string changes; seems too much like work. Edit: I just realized, the Adamas has had the same strings for nearly two years. O.o
