I was just in one of my local pawnshops and saw hanging, a nutmeg 1651 (serial 219832). This thing looks brand new with the exception of a few tiny cracks along the ivory binding on the neck. I couldn't really feel them when I ran my finger along the side of the neck. Very minor. There is virtualy no fretboard or fret wear. Stereo output. The front finish and back are perfect - like new - as is the neck. On the top of the headstock the finish is chipped a tiny bit but almost unnoticable. And it has an excellent brown case. They have it marked $495. I can probably get it for $430 or so. Sounds like a good deal. Is it?

1651 is the Legend Limited. Also known as the John Lennon Legend. Basically a Custom Legend without the abalone and finished in a dark nutmeg stain. They are really nice guitars. Dave

Produced only in 1981 and 1982. I used mine exclusively for 20 years. Still love it, and am considering buying another for my son.

I'm buying this 1981 beauty tomorrow. I will post pictures ASAP as it is in incredible shape. But I'm looking for is an Elite, so if there is any interest in this one out there in a trade I'd might consider it. I doubt if there are many 1651's out there that look this good.

Wow, I've been able to avoid GAS for the last year or so but some of the stuff that's been shown off here lately are really hitting home. This is one of them! That is nice! Deep bowl, right? Yummy! If you had said you were looking for an Eclipse, I'd be up all night thinking about it!

Hang onto that one, and if you ever do decide to let it go, offer it to the OFC members first. These are relatively rare as they were produced for only two years (1981-1982) and are recognized as very good quality models.

I would never take this baby to the Bay without offering it up on this site first. I would never have had the smarts to buy this one if I didn't spend time gaining knowledge on this site. But, als, when you find something like this, you tend to want to keep it, at least for a little while. When it told the wife that I just had to have this one, she said, "Well, I guess if it's that great, go get it". When I brought the guitar home and opened the case, she said it was the most beautiful guitar she'd seen. I was really impressed with that for someone whose never really said anything like that about any of my other gits.

Say, Prairiedog, you're only 100 miles away. Ever come to Denver? A few times a year, we try and get the locals together for a mini OFC jam and BBQ. We could compare our 1651s. I bought mine new and it was my only guitar for 20 years. Watch for jam announcements over the summer.

That's a great looker there prariedog, and I'm sure a beauty in the sound department!

If you're not doing anything on the 4th of July, come out to WA for the big NW gathering, and bring that baby along!

I just bought a 1651 on eBay - it is out for delivery right now according to the UPS tracking website. Price with shipping was $227. It has a chip in the headstock and apparently the electronics are on the fritz, but I figured the price was right. This will be my second Ovation - my first was a base model celebrity which (gone now) kind of turned me off of Ovations, but I will be back on the wagon now with this 1651. When I get it, I will post a picture - and try and figure out the missing link of the electronics.

Joe, you may find out that you don't like this guitar. But to be nice, I'll give you what you paid for it to let you out easy.

Seriously, these are great guitars. Under valued and under appreciated. You should like it a lot....

Joe, at that price, you could send it back to the Mothership, have it completely gone over, have the headstock spot and electronics repaired, and then end up with a rare and beautiful guitar at a very decent price! You won with this one.

The label on the pictured 1651 does not coincide with the years of production of this particular model. Therefore, it appears that the pristine condition may be due to a factory refurbishing at some time after the early 1990's, when the pictured label first appeared.

This guitar could have experienced some type of major overhaul, necesitating the change of the label. Or, it could simply be that the label was missing and the factory replaced the original label with the current edition.

Incidentally, as has been mentioned various times on this board, the 1651 was the end of the original run of the "Patriot" guitar from 1976, which commemorated the 200th anniversary of the United States. According to Ovation advertising, the mold was to be destroyed for the stencil after the first 1,776 Patriots, thus, as a result, the 1651 was born as the exact same guitar without the stencil.

As to the electronics...I had a 1669 CL with bad electronics. Got lots of advice but Kim said it was the saddle. Sent me a new saddle, plugged it in, that simple.

As to chips and cracks...search the archive & vault. A lot you can do, just need a little confidence.

Yeah, I noticed the label and I thought that it might have gone back for something as you suggest. Still, she looks great, plays nice, sounds clear as a bell, and is loud.
