Location: Frozen Tundra of Minnesota | I have noticed in the Photo Albums, that many of you hang your Guitars on the walls to make beautiful displays, you can see all of your pieces at one time.
I am getting enough now, that I want to create an environment to display mine also - I really like the hanging them on the wall look, and have a huge Family room downstairs that is currently finished, but empty, so I would like to transform it into my Guitar Haven.
Is there a certain type of Wall Hanger you recommend? How long can you leave them hanging on the wall? Does it create extra torque or stress on the necks to be hanging?
Any suggestions, or recommendation, or advice would be greatly appreciated!

There's one kind of hanger that has a little bar that flips down in front of the neck to help keep the guitar in place during the earthquake and ensuing landslide. I use a stud finder before mounting the hanger to make sure it's attached to something solid.

Location: Jet City | I'd run out of studs... I attached a 1x6 board across the wall (into the studs), then attached hangers to that. As for the mechanical thingy hangers, I opted for the simpler and cheaper 'string swing' brand. There are rubber pieces that keep it from coming out. I've had issues with the mechanical hercules ones, from them not opening to the rubber making marks on my necks. There's no additional stress to worry about, and it's easier keeping the climate for all of them in one place, than trying to make sure individual cases are properly humidified. Location: Boise, Idaho | I also use Swing Strings, but mounted them on 1x3 composite boards. I don't know what they are called, but got them at Lowe's. They were primed and I painted them to match the walls. The hangers are "stage" something and actually made to hang from amps or stage equipment. The have little metal disks that mount flat against the wall. I started with them because I got some at Guitar Center. They were tough to find when I needed more to match the ones I already had, so I'd recommend going with another type of Swing String. You don't need a board behind them, but I'd recommend going into a stud rather than sheet rock if you don't put a board behind them. I did both because the studs behind the wall were 24 inches apart, which is about right.
They'll hang forever with no damage and it's much easier to humidify a room than to humidify several guitars in cases. The only problem I've had with the new room is that a heat vent blows behind the bottom row of guitars and makes them bounce off the wall. I set an amp over the vent, which may only be a temporary solution. |

Location: Cicero, NY | I use Hercules as well but, as Damon said, they can leave marks where they grab. I was a bit surprised when I saw that happened to two of mine but those are the only stands I have so it had to be them. Outside of that I think they're great. Very secure stands. |

I am coming up with all sorts of ideas now, I like the boards mounted to the wall, and the String Swings mounted to the boards. The Family Room is rough cut cedar for the bottom 1/3 and white painted walls on top, and the Ovations will look great against it! And I think I can use a pine bough wallpaper border on the boards to make a nice contrast for the heads! Or not... I will go through a thousand ideas before deciding on just the perfect one for me.
Question on the String Swings - I notice that the Company itself sells Jumbo String Swings - and the Regular ones, do I need the Jumbo Guitar ones to accommodate the Ovations round backs? Ebay has the Stings Swings with the round catcher for just over $7/ea. for the regular sized ones.
I have also just bought a couple of those single and triple guitar floor stands to place by the nice comfy couch that I plan to put down there to plop-n-play on.
It won't be a Man-Cave, but it will be my 'Nan'-Cave, I have never had a room to myself before, I am going to Love this!!!

Oooooh! I remember those!!! We used to use those many years ago! Great Idea!!! The String Swing people sell wall bumpers, but they are so big, these would be Perfect!!! Thank You!!!  |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I used whatever I could find on sale, including the Hercules model, but I also use some that hang the guitar on the diagonal. I've customized some to hang on a wire shelf rack, and I've built my own, particularly those that hang directly off the ceiling. |

Sidebar / memory.... It was at one of the Amelia Island things. The Professor, some others, and myself went out to a nice little pizza place. The Prof places his order in plain, succinct, well organized English. Then has the server read it back to him. As the waiter turns away Prof turns to me and says... "They're gonna get it wrong.. they always do". I could not see how they could get it wrong. When they did, the look of quiet resignation on the Prof's face was priceless. |

Location: Jet City | Hercules knew they had a problem, and I believe all the newer models have different pads. They offered up the new replacements to those that called and complained... me being one of those people.
I still have my 3 way and a couple single floor stands from hercules, but still I think the holders are more gimmick than anything else. The feet that flip up to 'protect' it from falling out are plastic and there's moving mechanisms in there that can give out. One of my stands the spring has sprung and I have to manually lift it up for the feet to open so I can get the guitar out.
And my biggest bitch about the Hercules is the cost. I had too many to buy.
The string swings are plain rubber steel and wood. No moving parts to break, very sturdy, and theres absolutely no way a guitar is going to come off of it. You have to lift the guitar, turn it sideways, then pull it out. If there's an earthquake that manages that, I don't think a hercules hanger will help much either.

Location: Sunshine State, Australia | I've got 6 Hercules wall hangers and 4 Hercules floor stands - no marks on any of my guitar Necks. The height adjustment mechanism DID self destruct on two of my floor stands, a problem which is well documented, and I got 2 replacements without a hassle. The store was going to throw the old ones in the skip (dumpster) so I convinced them to let me put them in... A bit of a scrub with acetone to get rid of the sticky residue and some epoxy and a bit of 'Woodyesque' enginuity and voila! I've got 4 Hercules floor stands now. More stands than guitars... |

The same way you get grits on your plate 3 days in a row when you specifically ask for them on the side.
