It's not a huge deal, but it sure is inconvenient. I've been told by several relatives that I've been paying for a very active youth over the last several years. And I guess it's time for the next installment. I get to have a rotator tear and impingement repaired tomorrow on my dominant arm.

Sooooo.......no guitar for a good while, among other things. The surgery looks pretty routine though, and I had the same issue fixed on my other arm several years ago with no serious complications.

Wish me luck. And be patient with any posts I make in the near future. Typing with just my left index finger will be challenge enough, but I anticipate the pain meds raising the level of difficutly into humorous/embarrassing territory.

If you had an inactive youth, you'd probably have died of a heart attack by now. You'll be fine if you do what the doctors tell you. Get well soon.

I helped push a car out of a snowbank back in '79.
Shoulder has not been the same since.
My orthopedic doctor explained how the human skeletal system is a marvel of engineering.... except for the shoulders.

The low back seems to be a questionable "marvel of engineering" as well.

A friend of mine had that surgery a few years ago. He couldn't get his arm around an acoustic but he could play a solid body.

I always enjoy my pain meds. Nothing like an oxcodone/apap 5/325 to improve your outlook and brighten the tone of your day. Didn't John Prine address this fine issue a few short years ago with one of his songs?? Something like Illegal Smile. Although in this case it could definitely be labeled "Legal Smile"!

Patch

I had rotator cuff surgery to repair a "massive tear" (actual medical term). The surgery went well. Pain meds needed for the first week and nice to have for the second (yea yea nice to have anytime). I did Physical Therapy for 6 months. The first two weeks are about range of motion and then you very very slooooowly work your strength back.

I had an ACL repair on my knee years back. For that repair you can do the PT and really "He Man" it and work through it as fast as you're motivated. For the rotator cuff you can't "He Man" it because your trying to work the small muscles under the bigger stronger ones. They will only heal so fast and you just have to do exactly as the Physical Therapist tells you. It's less about strength and more about precise form in doing the exercises. After a couple of weeks it's no longer painful but just plain boring. But your final outcome will depend on you doing it as long and as much as instructed.

As far as guitar goes, I wouldn't be surprise if after 2 weeks you get cleared to do some finger picking. If the Dr or PT person is unsure bring your guitar in and let them watch. But the position of your right arm for playing is to keep it out a bit from your body and that's the position that they'll want you to keep your arm in. Strumming might be too much but some light finger picking might just be fine.

Good luck!

I've told this story many times, but be sure to ask your PT when you can play guitar. When I broke my wrist I finished my PT before I asked when I could start playing guitar again. She said she wished I had asked sooner because she could have worked the guitar playing into my therapy. I never did regain the range of motion in my left wrist.

I am all for staying ahead of the pain. As medical sometimes professionals that is how we were trained to educate our patients with PCA's and all that stuff. Currently I am somewhere around 3 years ahead of the next pain which I might incur!!

Thanks for asking Nancy. It's greatly appreciated.

I'm healing steadily and even managing to type with two hands at the moment. The best news though is that I didn't realize I was trading for a therapy guitar when I acquired my custom parlor, this year's September poster child.

Last night, I figured I could do worse than try to get my arm around its smaller body, and discovered that if I was very careful, I could manage some finger-picking for a short while. It was definitely good for the soul.

So hopefully, healing will contiue apace. It stilll hurts, and the range of motion is severely limited, but it gets a little better every day.

Thanks everyone for all the well wishes. I've been here every day, but not up to typing anything, and this little note has already made up my mind to get the sling back on ASAP.

I'm definitely looking forward to having my right arm get useful again....and teaching my son how to throw a football this autumn.

Slow and steady wins the race on this one Patch. Maybe your finger picking will benefit from this in the long run. When I had mine done I couldn't play pickup basketball for 6 months. In the interim I practiced my left handed layup and now I can shoot that shot pretty well.

Don't think you're getting out of putting together another one of those wonderful calendars for 2016.
