When the Little Dude became the Guitar Dude in 1970 - 71 the first issues had the XLR. It was short lived, so the majority of the Guitar Dudes do not have it before they were phased out several years later. I have never played through a Guitar Dude without the XLR, but the one I have sounds great for a solid state amp. With certain settings it almost sounds like a tube amp.

Note how the pins are labeled: not like a microphone input which would be pin 1 - ground, pin 2 - positive, pin 3 - ground. This shows +22 volts on pin 2 which is the voltage required to run the old Prismatone Baldwin preamps. I've never heard of a Prismatone equipped Ovation having a Baldwin preamp but perhaps this was the case.

Of course he also has a Baldwin...in fact I found where I asked him about the preamp...but you were in that topic also... http://ovationfanclub.com/megabbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=34651 "It 'only' needs a 9v battery, so it isn't the same setup as the Baldwin guitar(s). It sounds a bit less fat in comparison with the Baldwin; maybe the preamp is the reason of that." And the ad Which blows up pretty nice Hendrik did share a guy who had a Pris CA for sale, and he sent me pictures ... appeared to be the same guitar as in the ad, identical to Hendrik's. You wonder how many CA's still are out that have one. A lot of #'s have been thrown around...were you ever able to ascertain a ballpark # produced?

Ovation had to have been cranking guitars out at a great pace in 1970-71 but they switched over to there own pickup pretty fast. Prismatone equipped Ovations are rare enough on their own but to see this amp wired up for a Baldwin type preamp begs the question did some of the guitars have Baldwin innards as well as the pickups? Hendrik's guitar has the early version Ovation preamp and standard 1/4" output jack. Mine has an XLR out put but no preamp at all but the wiring in mine had been monkeyed with at sometime or other and had to be rewired to work correctly. Maybe it had a preamp originally, hard to say.
