I'm trying to build a new playlist and am searching for some material and thought I would open it up to the board. Style? Interesting but second tier acoustic tunes. What I mean by second tier is those songs that were not Number 1 hits for 75 weeks and then fell off so that now every acoustic player in the world plays them (think Brown Eyed Girl, Margaritaville). More like great tunes by players that people might not hear every day - ala Edwin McCain, Peter Gabriel, Colin Hay - but if you played them, people would recognize them.

Thoughts? (By the way, I've tapped a couple off your list already Cliff - thanks!)

The above site contained song hits from 1977 to now. That will get your memory jogged for starters.
I googled "top forty 1984". Many sites and songs were found. Oh yeah, that's a good one. Oh yeah, that's a good one. Oh yeah, that's a good one. Oh yeah, that's a good one....

along with Time in a Bottle, how about "Operator" and "Photographs and Memories" also by Jim Croce? :)

Others to mention:
James Taylor's "Something In The Way She Moves"
Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You"
Indigo Girls' "Closer To Fine"
Jeffrey Gaines' version of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes"
Edie Brickell's "What I Am"

That's it for now ... I might add more later

Peace!

Try a bunch of Croce stuff. I'll Have to Say I Love You is pretty easy once you figure out it starts at C#minor barred at the 4th fret, but with the 2 lowest strings open. New York's Not My Home might be fun in New York. Next for me may be I Learned the Hard Way Every Time. That's the way I have always learned.

Some great ideas, thanks! And thanks for the tip on the Croce tab, Mark - it's not like I've ever mastered any of his stuff.

And thanks again, Cliff. :D

There are a lot of great songs on the Byrds "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" album which ought to sound good as solo performances. Several songs off Workingman's Dead and American Beauty as well - and they have the added benefit of being real easy to play.

And Al Di Meola has an album's worth of pieces for solo guitar for those instrumental moments while you get your breath back between songs :p

Lately I've been adding older tunes like the Beatles Eight Days A Week (once you've got the openning riff, you've got the tune) and the Monkees' I'm A Believer. Both are easy, lay out well for solo guitar, and everybody knows them.

Recently added:

Jesse Winchester's "Biloxi"
and a fingerstyle version of
"Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite".
A bunch more too (that haven't made the outdated webpage), but I'm being stifled . . . so piss off . .

Actually I like a lot of Sister Hazel - fairly easy to play, pretty good harmonies ('course I typically play alone so the harmonies are accomplished by virtue of my multiple personalities), a little weak lyrically but good stuff overall I think fo acoustic fun - Counting Crows I like as well.

Thanks again everybody - some good stuff to play around with.

BrianT and I like to find the little gems that are just obscure enough that nobody else does them yet familiar enough to for the crowd to say, "Oh Yeah!".
I'll admit that these songs might also reflect our time spent on the planet.
Can't Get It Out of My Head---ELO
Happy Together---Turtles
Kids Are Alright---The Who
Natures Way---Spirit
Kind of Hush---Hermin's Hermits
Don't Let Me Down---Beatles
From Me To You ---Beatles
I Feel Fine---Beatles

We can play Wonderful Tonight pretty well. But Brian feels it falls into the cliche catagory so we mostly play it in practice.
If anyone wants a "one sheet" on any of these songs, hit me with an e-mail.
But if you really want to shake things up...learn a few uke chords. :D

". . Blister in the Sun- Violent Femmes . ."

That one's always a "crowd pleaser".
- providing the "crowd" consists of somewhat-tipsy 30-Something's (or under). If you're playing to the retiree "dinner crowd", skip it - you'll scare 'em off - save it for later.

Moody's suggestion of "I'm a Believer" is a good one, too. We do a bit of a "Surf-Rock" break in the middle that works well. Anything that gets the drunk chicks up & dancing (just DON'T let 'em "sing" . . . oy!)

Croce's "Don't Mess Around With Jim" goes over REALLY well (especially if the establishment has a pool table). Works well with segue-ing with other ("E"-Blues-type) songs ("Before You Accuse Me", "Pride & Joy", . . . hell, I've thrown the theme from "SesameStreet" in there . . and it "worked"!).

Save the laid-back, mellow stuff for a couple "warm up" tunes, for "catching your breath" between runs of up-tempo tunes, or for when there's NObody in the place. If y'got a crowd, get a "feel" for 'em & stick with stuff that'll keep 'em having a good time . . .

Two weeks ago, we had this one couple that were already at the establishment having dinner when we showed to set-up. We played pretty much all mellow stuff while people were dining, and gradually "ramped it up". This couple finished dinner and moved to the bar at the back of the room facing us. "She" was having a good time, occasionally singing along and dancing in her seat ("rather well", I might add). "He" pretty much stared at us the whole night, almost with a look of "disdain". It was a bit unnerving at times. I wrote-it-off that this guy was a musician (or was at one time), and had the attitude that "these guys aren't so hot . . I could do better". My attitude is "f*^k 'im, . . . I'm not here to impress anyone . . I'm here to have a good time like/with everybody else . . ."
Towards the end of the night, they make their way to leave, and have to pass the "bandstand" on their way to the door (bear in mind, they've been there almost four hours). They pass us, mid-song. "She" gives me a wink and a smile, "He" gives me a curt nod of the head as I see his hand go all the way down to the BOTTOM of the plastic mayonaise jar that serves as our "TipJar". . .
I figured if the guy wants to be THAT much of a "dick" that he's gonna clip a couple of $1 bills from us, so be it . . . "I hope he gets a DWI on the way home" I thought to myself. Rick and I joked about it after we finished the song.

At the end of the night, Rick empties out the "MoneyForStrings" from the mayo jar, and at the bottom of all the $1's and $5's is a nice, crispy portrait of Master Franklin! Hunnit Dollah BILL!!

The stock price of Patron tequila went up considerably that morning . . . .

Yer right Cliff. If the crowd is a group of retirees, I'd go with "Country Death Song" by the Femmes instead....

....It don't scare 'em, it kills 'ems outright.

...and if any of 'ems still kickin'...finish em off with "Old Mother Regan"....

Then rifle through their pockets...

This is my kind of happy ending - better than all that "Little House On The Prairie" moralising. Bonuses for musicians. Excellent. And I hope everyone here is similarly generous when they sit in a bar and listen for free. Go Cliff :D

I was pretty much dead-set against a "TipJar" at first. Thought it was kinda' low-class.
Then people started taking empty pint glasses and setting 'em up FOR us!! . . .

I figure, . . hell . . . we get paid $100 each by the venue . . . that's basically just motivation to haul all of our crap in and out of the place. We basically PLAY for free . . . if some patron wants to ensure that the NEXT time I'm playing for them (for free) that I'm doing so on nice, crispy-new strings . . . why not??

My daughter played piano when she was 12 for a huge crowd waiting to get into a banquet. It was a huge deal for her, but nobody seemed to pay any attention. Then one of our friends who bought some pins from her earlier, but only had $100 bills (no he's not a lawyer) gave her the $4 he owed her. Somebody else saw the $4 and got a glass to put it in on the table and the tips just started rolling in. I'm surprised she didn't decide to become a musician.

Ooo, be careful, Ciff, that's a mighty slippery slope. Pretty soon you could be doing Elvis for a couple extra 1's, a wink and a smile too. I think that's how Steve Lawrence got started...
