Location: North Texas | I see it like Tony does. Pawn shops peddle quite a few Ovations also, but I'm not sure if they would be considered dealers, like retailers. There is always an element of risk using ebay. On average most sellers are legitimate, but there are those occasional scheisters. |

At any rate, I asked the question because I cant believe that so many private parties would buy an Ovation, then become unsatisfied and then sell it.
On the other hand,it doesnt seem likely to me that there are that many businesses that rely on eBay sales for Ovations.
I was simply curious about the source of all the hundreds Ovations for sale on eBay each month.
(Three of my Ovations came from eBay, and one from Al P.) |

Don't know if "unsatisfied" is the reason for sale...lots of reasons, to include change in financial situation, moving to another model (not different manufacturer), was dad's in the closet, etc.
Also, eBay opens up sales to a large market...older quality O's are very affordable as a 1st or 2nd guitar. |

I've found a lot of the time either the seller doesn't need what they have, because they don't play, or they just plain need the money, or they have gone to a higher-end model. Seems very rare that someone is selling a USA Ovation just because they aren't happy with it. |

I think that's a trend in our society for all kinds of things. Really nothing unusual. In the past, I don't know about you, but I would go to my local music store or pawn shop (still do) and see what used instruments they have for sale. At these places you had to pay the middlemen their cut. Then you might look at the paper or some bulliten boards (the old physical kind). But there was never much of a selection. With the internet, the buyer and seller can get together directly, and there's more selection and better pricing. You see the same thing when it comes to stocks and bonds. You can trade all kinds of things in the comfort of your home, that 10 years ago would've been impossible. My perception is not that people are more "dissatisfied" over what they had 10 years ago. It's just that they finally have the tools to make a more efficient market.
What do you think? I'm sure most of us have bought and sold other things via the internet. You wouldn't say that the reason people are selling or buying shares of (Fill in the name of the last stock you bought or sold) is because they are dissatisfied. Same for guitars. |

Usually it was because I found something different that I wanted and the only way to finance it was to sell something that I already had.
Wouldn't it be great if illegal drugs worked like that? Imagine that you could get high on crack and then just shit it out and resell it to someone else and buy some better stuff with the proceeds?
Hey, speaking of eBay here's a good one. I was talking to a guy about all the new lingo and abbreviations we have adopted in the age of eBay. Things like "reserve price", "maximum bid", "OHSC", "BIN", etc. I commented that it's been so long since I had sex that I should qualify as "NOS". Shut up Cliff. |

Location: Upper Left USA | I like what tony has said. I would also add that for me I've made a series of trials and upgrades through the flavors based on funding limits. The classic treasures we seek don't show up in stores very often.
Ebay has a gimungous audience. This also makes it a target for less scrupulous entities as well. |

Location: south east Michigan | Another reason there are a lot of Ovations on ebay is because Ovation makes guitars that retain their playability for many, many years. All wood guitars, given any thing less than tender loving care eventually become unplayable and sit in an attic or closet. |

Location: North Texas | I think a lot of people buy instruments with high expectations of being able to play. It takes a lot of work, and time, to get past the early stages of playing. Some are unwilling to devote enough time, and then realize it's not happening. Ultimately, they fold and ebay beckons. That is one scenario anyway. It's amazing that some old instruments appear never to have been played beyond the unwrapping stage.
It would be hard to imagine someone would say they were selling their stuff because it was crummy, even if it is. Some people just have lots of money and can buy nice stuff. If they want to unload it, we benefit. If you know your products, and their values, you can get wonderful deals. If you are wanting to sell, ebay provides a buyer pool beyond belief, and unparalleled in recorded history. You can really get good deals on digital gadgets and gizmos on ebay. Multi tracks, processors, interfaces, and other recording stuff is selling for pennies on the dollar. Don't ya just love it. |
