I pulled out the Breadwinner today in a moment of nostalgia and noticed that my wrist didn't burn or tingle at all while playing.

Whoops.

The tingling started soon afterwards and progressed to varying numbness and hot needle-like feelings. I'm only typing this with one hand as a result.

First off, what can I do to remedy this? I'm about to go up and ice it, and I've already located some stretching exercises that seemed to help, but the pain/numbness continue.

I know improper technique can cause this, but would a guitar neck without enough "meat" in the back cause problems for the large-handed user? My hands measure 8 in. from wrist to middle finger, and 3-4 in. of that is finger.

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

My wrist to tip of middle finger almost measures 9" and I do not have any problems with fat neck acoustics or electics or thin neck ones.

My guess would be to check your technique. Sounds like you might be holding it at an unusual angle.

I've had Carpal tunnel surgery, and my wife NEEDS surgery in both hands but is stalling and trying everything else in the book. My personal feeling...it's not a guitar problem; it's a Carpal tunnel problem. I couldn't hold a pencil in my hand. It never occured to me to try to hold a pencil in a different way. You can try these coping methods for a while, but eventually you need the surgery. One week after surgery I was just fine again. John <>{

before you self diagnose go to a doctor.
in the meantime drink plenty of water and eat a banana every day.

I used to suffer from Repetitive Stress Syndrome in my right hand. Once I stopped wanking off it went away. No doctor or banana required. Dave

I usually hold off on giving unasked for advice (yeah, right) but this looks like it might be necessary.

Use the left hand too, Dave. Nice change of pace and lessens the stress on the right.

You know...I would imagine, that's all I'm sayin'...

Try your local dairy. Back on thread sort of, I broke my left wrist, actually both arm bones, a few years ago and gave up playing guitar. After 6 months of painful physical therapy I asked the PT whether I'd ever play again. She said guitar playing would be great for the strength in the wrist. I still lack a little range of motion because of the plate in my arm. I didn't ask her about Dave's exercise.

Surgury may be the final otion but just in case you did not know there are guitars made that have twisted necks and help greatly with this painfull affliction. I know I have the Carpal myself but I am lucky it only hits me when I play the big strings on the Bass and I dig in on the E string. My wrist pops and after the initial pain becomes usless in short order. Fun ain't it? I have compensated for this by converting my main 4 string Rickenbacker into a 5. This keeps me from having to reach over so far on the neck to hit the low E string. For a guitar player, check out "Rickenbacker" They made a guitar many years ago that has frets that are slanted and change the angle of attack when you play, (expensive but an investment that will not loose money) and I think there is a company called "Little Guitar Works" I know they make Basses called "Torzal" and these are the nuts for ergonomic comfort! I find it amazing how these necks can have a truss rod?? Genius of a design. A lot like our Mr. Kaman.

And get an ergonomic keyboard so you can spend the rest of your time writing useless responses like I do.

It is more than likely an approach problem. Change how you hold it and the pain might subside.
Katana, this would be holding the neck higher so that in playing your wrist is more straight.
Dave, you could try the French Maid approach. (ask Cliff if you're unfamiliar with this technique)

Is that a real guitar? I've never seen anything like it. I'm not sure if it's a put on or not. It's a cool looking rig, for sure. I liked the BJ Thomas song.

Remember, it's called "Repetitive Motion Disease", so changing the structural & physical movements in your hands and wrists may be the best therapy. I never play more than 2 hours daily, uninterrupted. Handwriting about 3 or 4 behavioral healthcare assessments daily, 1 1/2 hour tennis sessions three days a week, fiddling with a capricious VW all-too-often, and "other duties as assigned" from SheWhoMustBeObeyed. 53, and relatively nonsymptomatic. Maybe just lucky, I don't know......

Buckaroo, it's for real. Everything Dingwall makes has the Novex fret system which is the slanted frets. Looks weird but plays more naturally than any bass I have ever played (and I have played and owned a lot of them). It has perfect intonation throughout the scale, anywhere on the neck.

As I mention in my gallery with the other pics of the Dingwall, once I got this bass, I sold off all the other basses I had because this one did it all.

FROM THE DINGWALL SITE:

THE NOVAX® FANNED-FRET SYSTEM™ – UNDER LICENSE FROM NOVAX GUITARS®

After years of building basses mostly using the Novax® Fanned-Fret System™, but also some with standard parallel frets, we've come to the conclusion that the use of this technology makes basses better - period. The tension and tone from string to string is more even and low note definition is greatly improved. EQing a bass whose strings are all of a similar tonal character is so much easier than when the low strings have a darker quality and the higher strings have a brighter quality. Body woods – Dual density swamp ash core, optional exotic wood top.

Thanks for all the tips-I currently have the wrist iced and I'm off the guitars for two weeks. :(

It's all for the best.

That is one sweet bass, Stephen!

When you have a bass like that you don't need to fear banjos. You've already won.
